~Opening doors to advanced clinical care for neighbouring states~
Mumbai/Kolkata, 9th January 2023: As a first step towards opening the excellent clinical care for neighbouring states, Medica Group of Hospitals, the largest private hospital chain in Eastern India, conducted Tripura’s first successful Heart Transplant and cured Mr. Ranjit Roy, a 44-year-old shopkeeper from Barjala, Sepahijala, Tripura with a successful procedure at its flagship facility Medica Superspecialty Hospital in Kolkata. He was suffering from dilated cardiomyopathy (a type of heart muscle disease that causes the heart chambers (ventricles) to thin and stretch, growing larger, not allowing it to pump blood efficiently). He was at the end-stage with potential risk of heart failure and a very poor life expectancy. The team of experienced doctors from the cardiac surgery department led by Dr. Kunal Sarkar, Senior Vice Chairman & Senior Consultant of the department of Cardiac Surgery, Medica Superspecialty Hospital, Kolkata, Dr. Soumyajit Ghosh, Consultant Cardiac Surgeon, Dr. Dipanjan Chatterjee, ECMO Physician, and Critical Care Specialist at Medica Superspecialty Hospital, and the care team of Medica joined hands together for this miraculous case. With this Tripura resident became the first person from that state to have his heart transplantation from Kolkata.
Mr. Ranjit Roy was suffering from dilated cardiomyopathy and hence he was finding it difficult to carry out his daily chores. His condition was such that his life expectancy was weaning from bad to worse. He was prescribed many medications, some of which were becoming too expensive for him to bear as he is the only earning member of his family & is survived by his son, wife, and sick mother. Three months before, he took advice from Dr. Kunal Sarkar who suggested him to undergo Heart Transplantation and for the same, a donor heart was urgently required. After a long wait, on 30th December, a donor’s heart was received at Medica Hospital, Kolkata from Mr. Hiranmoy Ghoshal, a 51-year-old theatre personality, who was transferred from Burdwan to Medica Superspecialty Hospital on 28th December & was declared brain dead on 30th December.
On 30th December, Mr. Ranjit Roy was asked to travel immediately from Tripura. Both the donor and recipient were at the hospital and was operated simultaneously. This miraculous heart transplant was performed at Medica hospital which opened doors to advanced clinical care for neighbouring states as well. The entire Medica fraternity and the family of Mr. Ranjit Roy is indebted for this humane gesture by the family of the deceased late Mr. Hiranmoy Ghoshal.
Dr. Soumyajit Ghosh, stated that, “This was particularly challenging to coordinate entire operation as we had only 4 hrs time to transplant the harvested heart. This gives us confidence to undertake such advanced cardiac procedure for people of neighbouring states.”
Dr. Dipanjan Chatterjee, stated, “There has been a miraculous recovery for Mr. Roy, and he is out of danger. His heart is functioning optimally, and all the vitals the working fine. By stabilizing the immune suppressants his antibiotics are also being slowly reduced. He is walking and having normal food. His blood pressure and heart rate are completely normal. This act of kindness by the donor has given a new lease of life for Mr. Roy. While we empathize with Mr. Ghoshal’s family for their loss, we also thank them for offering to give up five organs to various recipients across the city’s hospitals. More people should come forward like his family and help us doctors, save more lives.”
Dr. Kunal Sarkar, who led the operation, said, “We at Medica will be forever grateful to Mr. Ghoshal & his family for donating his heart and saving the life of Mr. Roy. We waited for months despite knowing that Mr. Roy’s condition is getting
weaker day by day. The heart transplant was the need of the hour and the moment we got the consent from the donor’s family, we prepared ourselves for the operation simultaneously. The patient has made a very good recovery, and he will be discharged from the hospital today. We wish him all the very best and a healthy life ahead. As a doctor, we want to raise awareness about organ donation so that more lives can be saved, and we hope that more families will come forward to pledge organs.”
Mr. Udayan Lahiry, Co-founder & Director, Medica Group of Hospitals, averred, “Heart failure affects 1% of India’s total population, and if detected early, many lives can be saved. People who live in remote areas may find such an operation difficult to carry out due to time constraints. Hence, to save precious lives, we frequently organize free health camps in remote areas and assist them as required. We are here to serve, regardless of financial status, gender, or nationality, and we are extremely grateful to have saved yet another life. We urge citizens not to hesitate and donate organs which can save more and more lives.”
“We are immensely grateful to Mr. Hiranmoy Ghoshal and his family members for donating his organs and setting an example to the society, this act of kindness has given a new lease of life to 6 separate individuals and their families.” Said Mr. Ayanabh DebGupta, Co-founder & Director Medica Hosptials Pvt Ltd.
