New Delhi, January 15: Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang inaugurated the three-day-long Jorethang Maghey Sankranti Mela-2024 themed ‘Hamro Parampara, Hamro Sanskar, Hamro Sanskriti’ at Jorethang Playground, on Sunday.
Organised by Jorethang Maghey Sankranti Mela Committee 2024, the programme had the presence of SLA Speaker, Cabinet Ministers, Lok Sabha MP, MLAs, panchayats, members of various organisations, along with people from all walks of life.
The Chief Minister visited traditional stalls set up by different communities, followed by the inauguration of the 13th Sale of Articles of Rural Artisans Society (SARAS) trade fair.
During the programme, the Chief Minister was felicitated by the Headmaster and staff of Gelling Junior High School for upgrading the school from Primary School.
A video highlighting the development of Zoom-Salghari Constituency was also showcased.
The Chief Minister also handed over cheques and tokens to various beneficiaries under the schemes of the Chief Minister’s Office.
A total of 217 beneficiaries received cheques under the Chief Minister’s Financial Assistance for higher studies, while 24 students were given laptops. Additionally, 23 beneficiaries got cheques under the Vatsalaya Scheme. Meanwhile, a total of 99 beneficiaries received grants under the Chief Minister’s Discretionary Grant(CMDG) to various religious institutions, businesses, NGOs, and entrepreneurs. Likewise, 61 sanctioned orders were also distributed under the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.
Similarly, under the CMDG, Bikash Rai of Gelling-Samsing GPU received four desktops, two laptops, one printer, and one photocopier machine to establish a Community Service Centre. He had submitted his application during Jan Bhet Karyakram, and was handed over according to his request.
Jorethang Maghey Mela is one of the biggest ‘melas’ celebrated during the festival of ‘Maghey/Makar Sankrati’ in the town of Jorethang,South Sikkim, which lies on the banks of river Rangit. The main activities during this mela are sale and exhibition of local handicrafts and handlooms, floriculture and horticulture products, cultural programme and competitions in local dance and music. The festival carries on for almost a week. People from neighbouring States as well as tourists from all over the country as well as abroad visit Jorethang during this festival.
