Ministry of Jal Shakti presents Shiv Nadar School Best Water Management Award

School’s holistic approach to water conservation sets a benchmark for sustainable practices in the education sector

New Delhi, 26th April 2023: In recognition of its outstanding water conservation efforts, Shiv Nadar School, Gurugram has been awarded the “Best Water Management School” by The Water Digest- India’s premier water magazine. The Water Digest Water Awards 2022-23 were presented this year by the Ministry of Jal Shakti, the Department of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation, and the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change in partnership with UNESCO. The Shiv Nadar School, Gurgaon received the award in the presence of the Hon’ble Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Union Minister of Jal Shakti.

Shiv Nadar School’s commitment to water conservation and sustainable practices is proven by its various initiatives. To begin with, the school has installed an R.O. plant with a dual UV system, multi-graded filters, and an activated carbon filter to maintain water quality. As part of its effective water management, daily checks and quarterly checks by a third party are conducted to ensure water quality. Moreover, accredited lab surprise checks are also conducted twice a year. The school does not allow water stagnation and uses a hydro-pneumatic system to ensure the same. An effective maintenance plan is also in place to avoid any leakages, and infrastructure maintenance is done regularly.

The school has also implemented water conservation practices to minimise wastage. To engage students, workshops are conducted for young learners on water wastage. As part of the capstone projects, one of the students’ innovations was Force Fluid, a device some Grade 10 students developed to avoid R.O. water wastage.

Dual flushing systems and automatic turning-off taps are installed in all washrooms to avoid water wastage. Native plants, such as Molshree, Kadam, Champa, Panda, and Sehjan, that require less water are planted around the campus.

The school reuses 10 lakh litres of water every month through the STP plant. Rainwater run-off and any other run-off water are recharged back to earth through rainwater harvesting.

Monica Sagar, Director-Principal, Shiv Nadar School, expressed her pride in receiving the ‘Best Water Management School’ award by The Water Digest. She said, “Water is one of the most crucial natural resources humankind needs. At Shiv Nadar School, we believe we are responsible for conserving natural resources and promoting sustainable practices. This award is a testament to our efforts towards achieving environmental sustainability. I would like to extend my appreciation to Col Sandeep and his team for their unwavering commitment to carrying out our trustees’ vision of a green planet.
