Haryana Elections 2024: Unveiling Congress’ Promises After Rajasthan and Himachal Pradesh Polls

With assembly elections in Haryana fast approaching, scheduled for October 5 with counting on October 8, Congress is striving to return to power after a decade. However, the past un-met promises may cast a shadow over their campaign. Of the 90 seats up for grabs, Congress is contesting 89, leaving the Bhiwani seat for CPI (M). The majority requirement is 46 seats.

In Rajasthan, one of Congress’s key promises — to waive farmers’ loans — remains a sore point. During a rally in Pokhran on November 26, Rahul Gandhi assured loan waivers within ten days if Congress won the 2018 Assembly Elections. Although Congress formed the government, this commitment was not fulfilled, contributing to BJP’s win in 2023.

Unkept Pledges in Himachal Pradesh
The situation in Himachal Pradesh resembles that of Rajasthan. In the November 2022 Assembly elections, Congress’s “ten guarantees” were central to their victory. Priyanka Gandhi promised to create one lakh jobs in the first cabinet meeting, but this pledge was not realized even after the first cabinet session under Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu in January 2023.

Another significant promise in Himachal was a monthly pension of Rs 1500 for women. This was important, as women make up 36.9 lakh of the state’s 75 lakh population. Although Congress introduced the Indira Gandhi Pyari Behna Sukh Samman Nidhi Yojana, the conditions attached limited its impact.

Government Employees’ Concerns
Government employees in Himachal Pradesh have also struggled with salary and benefit delays. State Electricity Pensioners had to stage protests over their unpaid dues. They warned that if payments weren’t made by December 31, they would return their board cards to the Election Commission in protest.

Meanwhile, the BJP remains active in Haryana. Kanwaljit Ajrana from BJP declined to run from Pehowa, while INLD-Halopa formed an alliance that could affect multiple seats. JJP-ASP released their candidate list for Karnal, and Bhupinder Singh Hooda’s personal finances and legal matters have drawn attention.

Electoral Dynamics and Alliances
In Kaithal, BJP’s Lilaram Gurjar will face Congress’ Aditya Surjewala, while in Radaur, BJP’s Shyam Singh Rana competes with Congress’ Bishan Lal Saini. In Kalka, BJP has fielded Ambala Mayor Captain Abhimanyu against MLA Pradeep Chaudhary, who switched from INLD to Congress.

AAP also released its fifth list of nine candidates for the Haryana elections. Congress has accused BJP of dissolving the Haryana Assembly to mask its lack of majority. Former Deputy CM Dushyant Chautala highlighted internal rifts within Congress and noted growing public support for JJP.

The stakes are high for all political parties as they gear up for a closely contested election in Haryana.
