Mamman Khan, a Congress candidate, secured an overwhelming victory in the Jhirka assembly seat within Nuh, Haryana, defeating his opponents by a margin of 98,441 votes. The Election Commission’s records reveal that Khan garnered a total of 1,30,497 votes in the process.
Yet, Khan’s win is shrouded in controversy. He currently faces charges under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), with accusations pointing to his alleged involvement in the communal violence that broke out in Nuh on July 31, 2023.
Khan’s electoral success is largely linked to the strong support he received from the local Muslim community, but reports indicate that he may have also drawn backing from illegal Rohingya immigrants residing in the district.
Nuh, known for its predominant Muslim population of approximately 80%, has reportedly seen demographic shifts due to the arrival of undocumented Rohingya migrants. Following the violent clashes in Nuh, authorities arrested multiple Rohingya refugees on suspicions related to the unrest.
Adding a new layer of concern, Organiser Weekly published a video on October 7 showing a madarsa in Nuh allegedly frequented by illegal immigrants. In the footage, children at the makeshift school can be heard chanting phrases like “Non-believers will burn in hell,” raising alarms. Reports claim that around 400 illegal immigrants are currently residing in the area.
The teachers at this madarsa openly identified themselves as Myanmar nationals who have entered India illegally. Proudly stating they have faced no issues in Nuh, they described themselves as ‘Mehmaan’ (guests) and shared that they are teaching the children languages such as Urdu, Pashto, Farsi, English, and Hindi.
The journalists visiting the site also spoke with children who expressed aspirations of becoming “Hafiz,” or individuals who memorize the Quran, rather than aiming for professions like doctors or engineers.
One of the Rohingya refugees admitted to entering India illegally from Bangladesh in 2016 to escape violence in Myanmar. He revealed that he crossed without a passport or visa, relying on facilitators for help to reach India.
Media reports also highlight that his only identification is a UNHCR refugee card, lacking any official Indian documents. This raises critical concerns about the ramifications of unchecked immigration on local communities, especially in areas prone to communal tension.
These findings put the Congress party under the spotlight. Is Congress knowingly supporting these outsiders? Why is the party standing by those who offer refuge to Rohingyas? Is the party leveraging Rohingyas as a votebank? Will Congress clarify the role of Rohingyas in its electoral strategy?
The public will watch closely to see how long Congress can sustain this approach.
