Experts Warn of the Serious Risks of Sleeping with Contact Lenses and Ignoring Expiry Dates

New Delhi, 20 May, 2025 – Millions of people around the world rely on contact lenses for clear vision and greater convenience compared to traditional glasses. However, experts are raising concerns over common misuse that could have serious consequences for eye health. One of the most frequent and dangerous habits among lens users is sleeping with contact lenses that are not specifically designed for overnight wear.

During sleep, the eyes receive significantly less oxygen and produce fewer tears. When contact lenses remain in the eyes overnight under these conditions, the reduced oxygen flow can result in dryness, inflammation, and an increased risk of infection. In more severe cases, this can lead to the development of corneal ulcers—painful open sores on the eye’s surface that, if left untreated, may cause permanent vision damage.

Another issue drawing attention is the tendency among users to ignore expiry dates and recommended replacement schedules. Over time, contact lenses begin to degrade, reducing their oxygen permeability and increasing the potential for bacteria and protein deposits to build up. This can lead to eye irritation, blurry vision, and a heightened risk of infection. Adhering to the prescribed usage period is essential for maintaining lens performance and protecting eye health.

Eye care professionals advise the public to be vigilant for warning signs such as redness, swelling, persistent eye discomfort, blurry or reduced vision, sensitivity to light, and unusual discharge. These symptoms may indicate an underlying issue that requires prompt medical attention.

Maintaining proper lens hygiene is also crucial. Users should always wash their hands before handling lenses, use only approved solutions for cleaning and storage, and avoid using tap water or saliva. It is equally important to avoid sharing lenses and to refrain from wearing them while swimming or showering, as exposure to water can introduce harmful microorganisms into the eye.

Experts emphasize that small, preventive steps can significantly reduce the risk of complications. Removing lenses before sleep—unless they are specifically designed for extended wear—replacing them on schedule, and attending regular eye check-ups can all help ensure long-term eye health.

“Many people underestimate how fragile the eye is and how easily it can be harmed by improper lens use,” said Dr Rishi Raj Borah, Country Director, Orbis(India). “We frequently see preventable cases of infections and corneal ulcers that result from something as simple as sleeping with the wrong type of lenses or using expired ones. Following basic hygiene and usage guidelines can make a world of difference.”

As awareness grows, experts hope that more contact lens users will recognize the importance of responsible lens care. Protecting vision begins with informed choices and consistent habits.
