Efforts Underway to Improve Connectivity on Sevoke–Gangtok Highway: Chief Minister meets with the NHIDCL Delegation

New Delhi, July 1: With an aim towards enhancing regional connectivity, Chief Minister Mr Prem Singh Tamang met the Managing Director of the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), Dr. Krishan Kumar and his delegation, along with Minister Roads & Bridges Mr NB Dahal, Advisor cum MLA Mr. Erung T Lepcha and Mr. Sukbir Subba, Chief Engineer, NHIDCL, at Chief Minister’s official residence, Mintokgang yesterday.

The meeting centred on the urgent need to upgrade road infrastructure for greater commuter convenience and long-term sustainability.

Key among the topics discussed was the deteriorating condition of the existing Sevoke–Gangtok highway, which remains vulnerable due to challenging terrain and adverse weather conditions, particularly during the monsoon season. The Chief Minister emphasized the need for a permanent, reliable solution in the form of a standard double-lane highway that can ensure safe and uninterrupted travel throughout the year.

Encouragingly, NHIDCL officials confirmed that a consultant has already been appointed and that plans are underway to develop the highway to modern standards, offering hope for improved accessibility and safety in the near future.

During the meeting, the Chief Minister also extended his gratitude to the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways for declaring the 23-kilometre Melli–Singtam stretch as NH-210. This alternative route is expected to play a pivotal role in the economic revival of the region, benefiting both local residents and travellers.
