Delhi NCR, 26th August 2025: In yet another testament to its expertise in advanced oncology care, Paras Health Gurugram has successfully treated a complex case of recurrent thyroid cancer in a 31-year-old woman from Myanmar. The patient, Mrs. Nang Hla Hla Htay, had a long-standing history of papillary thyroid carcinoma, having undergone two thyroid surgeries over a decade ago in her native country. She approached Paras Health with significant swelling in the neck and a lump in her right breast
The patient was evaluated thoroughly and diagnostic tests revealed a recurrent tumor in neck and large tumor in upper chest (retrosternal extension), along with enlarged lymph nodes.
Given the complexity of her condition, the Surgical Oncology team at Paras Health, led by Dr. Ashwani Sharma, designed a comprehensive surgical plan. On December 17, 2024, the patient underwent a highly intricate procedure which included completion thyroidectomy (removal of remaining thyroid tissue), excision of the recurrent mass from the neck and upper chest area, and removal of affected lymph nodes from both sides of the neck with a hybrid approach combined cervical and trans thoracic (VATS). A minimally invasive trans thoracic approach was used to dissect and mobilize the tumor in the chest and cervical approach in open technique was used to complete the cervical (neck) part of the surgery, and thus an open incision chest (Sternotomy) was avoided.
Throughout the surgery, critical structures such as the vocal cords and breathing pathways were carefully protected “In such cases, preserving vital nerves and ensuring complete removal of the tumor is like walking a tightrope. Our multidisciplinary approach and use of precise surgical techniques allowed us to treat the disease effectively while safeguarding the patient’s voice and breathing function,” said Dr. Ashwani Sharma, Senior Director, Surgical Oncology and Robotic Surgery, Paras Health Gurugram.
Following the surgery, Mrs. Nang was closely monitored in the ICU before being shifted to the general ward. Her post-operative recovery was smooth, with no major complications. She was discharged in stable condition within days, with two small surgical drains in place to aid healing.
Expressing satisfaction over the successful procedure, Mrs. Nang said, “I was very worried when I found out my cancer had returned, but the doctors at Paras Health gave me hope and confidence. The care I received here was far beyond my expectations. Everyone was kind, attentive, and professional. I’m thankful to be going home stronger and healthier.”
This case highlights Paras Health Gurugram’s capabilities in managing complex cancers, particularly cases involving multiple surgical challenges and prior interventions. The hospital’s patient-first approach, backed by cutting-edge medical expertise, ensures that even foreign nationals trust Paras Health for critical treatments that demand high precision.
