Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road: Successful Removal of Multiple Large Bladder Stones in 55-Year-Old Patient Using Advanced Laser Lithotripsy

Mumbai- Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road, recently treated a rare and complex case of multiple large bladder stones (vesical calculi) in a 55-year-old male patient with a history of diabetes and hypertension. The patient had been experiencing urinary difficulties for several months, including intermittent stopping of urination, frequent urges to urinate, and recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs). Upon evaluation, clinical examination and ultrasound imaging revealed multiple vesical calculi, each measuring approximately 3 cm in size, comparable to golf balls. The presence of such large and multiple stones posed a considerable risk to the patient’s urinary health, with the potential for kidney damage, repeated infections, and worsening urinary obstruction.

Given the severity of the condition, surgical intervention was advised. The patient was counseled about the available options, including open surgery or laser lithotripsy, a minimally invasive approach that uses high-powered laser energy to break the stones into smaller fragments. After a detailed discussion, the patient chose to undergo laser lithotripsy, which offers quicker recovery, less postoperative pain, and minimal scarring compared to traditional open surgery.

The procedure was successfully performed by Dr. Ashutosh Baghel, Consultant Urologist, Andrologist & Renal Transplant Surgeon at Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road. Multiple large stones were fragmented and removed through a laser-based endoscopic technique. The patient tolerated the procedure well and is now recovering uneventfully, with significant relief from urinary symptoms.

Speaking about the case, Dr. Ashutosh Baghel said, this case was particularly challenging because of the unusually large size and number of bladder stones. In most cases, bladder stones are smaller and singular. Here, we were dealing with multiple stones, each around 3 cm, which is quite rare. With the use of advanced laser lithotripsy, we were able to treat the condition effectively in a minimally invasive manner. Patients with diabetes and hypertension are already prone to urinary infections and complications, which makes timely diagnosis and intervention all the more important.

This successful outcome highlights the expertise of the urology team at Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road and the availability of cutting-edge technology that ensures safe and effective treatment for complex urological conditions.
