Bengaluru, February 6, 2026: The CII Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) successfully hosted the first IGBC Green Karnataka Summit 2026 at Hotel Shangri-La, Bengaluru. The summit brought together senior government leaders, urban planners, architects, developers, sustainability experts, and industry stakeholders to deliberate on “Advancing Sustainability vis-à-vis Climate Resilience in Urban Built Karnataka.”

The summit served as a strategic platform to examine Karnataka’s urban growth trajectory through the lens of climate resilience, resource efficiency, and long-term sustainability. With cities increasingly exposed to climate risks such as heat stress, water scarcity, flooding, and infrastructure strain, the discussions focused on reimagining urban development models that are low-carbon, inclusive, and future-ready, while supporting economic growth and quality of life.

The inaugural was graced by Mr. Maheshwar Rao. M, IAS Chief Commissioner – GBA and Administrator, All Bengaluru City Corporations; along with Mr. Zayd Noaman, President, CREDAI Bengaluru Executive Director, CMD’s Office, Prestige Group; Mr. Gurmit Singh Arora, Chairman, IGBC Marketing Outreach & Strategic Alliances; Dr. Anup Naik, Chairman, IGBC Bengaluru Chapter and Mr. V Gopal, Co-Chairman, IGBC Bengaluru Chapter.

Setting the context for the day’s deliberations, the inaugural highlighted Karnataka’s unique opportunity to emerge as a national and global leader in sustainable urbanization by integrating policy, planning, design, and technology.

Shri Maheshwar Rao, IAS, Chief Commissioner – GBA and Administrator, All Bengaluru City Corporations, delivered a special address, highlighting the critical role of sustainable planning and institutional coordination in shaping Bengaluru and Karnataka’s urban future. While addressing the Summit, he said, “Karnataka’s green building journey reflects a decisive shift from ambition to execution. The state has demonstrated how sustainability can be mainstreamed across residential, commercial, industrial, and public infrastructure at scale. What is particularly encouraging is the growing momentum around Net Zero buildings, climate-resilient design, water security, and green factories, which are increasingly becoming the new normal rather than exceptions. While the market has shown strong intent and capability, well-designed incentives—such as faster approvals, fiscal benefits, and recognition mechanisms—can significantly accelerate adoption and ease implementation, especially for Net Zero and high-performance green projects. Through continued collaboration between government, industry, developers, and the design community, Karnataka is well positioned to translate sustainability into enhanced liveability, climate resilience, and long-term economic value. We would like to work closely with IGBC in greening the Bengaluru city as per IGBC Green City Rating System. Also, I would like to congratulate IGBC for 1,539 IGBC-registered projects covering 1.13 billion square feet in the state.”

The summit featured an Exclusive Leadership Plenary showcasing global best practices in urban sustainability, followed by expert-led panel discussions on future-ready cities, smart infrastructure, climate-responsive planning, and net-zero strategies across the building lifecycle. Sessions explored actionable pathways for integrating policy, technology, and design innovation to enhance urban livability while reducing environmental impact.

Ar. Anup Naik, Chairperson, IGBC Bengaluru Chapter, highlighted IGBC’s role in catalyzing the green building movement across Karnataka and underscored the need for accelerating adoption of sustainability frameworks across residential, commercial, industrial, and infrastructure projects.  In his opening remarks at the Green Karnataka Summit, he said “Karnataka’s leadership in the green building movement is a result of sustained collaboration across government, industry, and the design community. With over 1,500 registered green building projects covering more than 1.13 billion square feet, the state today ranks among the top three performers nationally. What makes this achievement truly significant is the diversity of our ecosystem—from green commercial and residential developments to large-scale transit and infrastructure projects—demonstrating that sustainability in Karnataka is not confined to one sector but deeply embedded across buildings and built environments. This momentum reflects both our collective commitment and the growth of Karnataka’s green building journey.”

The panel discussion on Sustainable Urban Planning and Future Cities in Karnataka addressed Karnataka’s urbanization and climate challenges through integrated planning approaches that balance land use, mobility, infrastructure, and ecology. Participants emphasized green infrastructure, transit-oriented development, and resource-efficient services as foundational elements, while highlighting the critical role of policy coherence, inter-agency collaboration, and smart city technologies in achieving sustainable growth. The discussion underscored citizen-centric planning, climate-resilient infrastructure, and adaptive design as essential pathways for building inclusive, environmentally responsible, and future-ready cities that balance economic development with ecological stewardship across Karnataka.

Speaking on the market and industry perspective, Mr. Gurmit Singh Arora, Chairman, IGBC Marketing Outreach and Strategic Alliances, highlighted the role of green buildings and sustainable infrastructure in attracting investments, enhancing asset value, and positioning Karnataka as a preferred destination for responsible real estate and infrastructure development. Delivering the theme address he said, “Karnataka has all the fundamentals required to emerge as one of India’s most ideal states for green and net zero development, from strong urban growth to a maturing green building ecosystem. The opportunity now is to move from isolated islands of excellence to green solutions at scale, making sustainable buildings the norm rather than the exception. Policy support and well-structured incentives can play a catalytic role in this transition, making implementation easier, faster, and more economically viable. When incentives align with sustainability goals, they significantly accelerate adoption, enabling cities to become more resilient, livable, and future-ready.”

The summit featured in-depth panel discussions addressing key themes critical to Karnataka’s urban future:

  • Net Zero strategies and operational advancements, focusing on decarbonization across the building lifecycle—from design and material selection to operations and end-of-life management.
  • Healthy buildings and sustainable wellbeing, highlighting how indoor environmental quality, natural light, acoustics, and thermal comfort contribute to occupant health while reducing environmental impact.

Experts from government, industry, consulting, academia, and design practices shared insights on innovative technologies, materials, and operational practices that can significantly reduce carbon emissions, optimize resource use, and enhance building performance.

The summit concluded with the IGBC Green Crusader Awards 2026, recognizing 184 upcoming green building projects amounting to 83 million sq ft across Karnataka that commit to building green and clean. These projects were registered under a special drive aligned with the Green Karnataka Summit, reinforcing a shared commitment towards building a sustainable built environment in the state. The awards and felicitation ceremony also acknowledged the continued support and collaboration of government departments, industry partners, and stakeholders who play a pivotal role in advancing the green building movement in Karnataka.

Through the IGBC Green Karnataka Summit 2026, IGBC reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with governments, industry, and communities to drive the transition towards climate-resilient, resource-efficient, and low-carbon urban development. The summit reinforced the need for collective action to ensure that Karnataka’s cities are engines of economic growth while becoming resilient, livable, and environmentally responsible.
