Inside REHAU India’s Category Leadership: Advancing Material Design & Manufacturing Excellence For Over Two Decades

There are moments in an industry’s evolution that pass quietly, yet change everything that follows. REHAU’s entry into India in 1997 was one of those moments. Over the past twenty five years, that early presence has grown alongside the country’s furniture and interiors industry, shaping how materials are specified, finished and scaled. Something that began as a focused introduction of engineered solutions has grown into a broader influence on manufacturing precision and surface quality. In this arena, REHAU’s reputation & the German legacy stems from the longevity & a sustained contribution in raising the overall benchmarks across the interiors ecosystem.

When we look back a couple of decades ago, furniture manufacturing was largely rooted in workshop practices. We are talking about an era where finishing quality depended heavily on individual skill. Consistency across projects remained a challenge, especially at scale. The introduction of engineered edgebands began to shift that scene by bringing a level of precision as well as durability that held up across usage conditions and climates. Over time, this intervention contributed to raising finishing standards across modular kitchens besides wardrobes & commercial furniture.

This early shift has since grown into a larger manufacturing and material ecosystem. Moreover, REHAU & its ode to German engineering has translated into it being Pioneers of various interior & furniture focused categories with edgebands being at the centre of it. The company’s continued dominance in this category stems from the fact that it has been a category creator in the uPVC edgebands category in India.

REHAU’s edgeband production in India is anchored in Vadodara, Gujarat, where the facility operates with over 20 extrusion lines and an annual production capacity of approximately 8,500 tonnes. Built on advanced extrusion as well as co-extrusion technologies derived from German engineering, the plant enables consistent output across PVC alongside ABS & PMMA formats. Earlier operations in Pune laid the groundwork for this expansion, allowing the company to scale in line with the growth of the organized furniture sector.

At a product level, RAUKANTEX edgebands has emerged as a defining range within this category. With over 1,400 designs alongside a wide portfolio of precisely colour-matched options, it supports seamless integration between surface as well as its edge. The introduction of zero-joint technology in 2006 marked a major advancement – a magnificent upgrade that eliminated visible glue lines & enabled a cleaner, uninterrupted surface finish: one that has quickly become a standard in high-quality interiors.

The evolution from edge solutions to surface systems showcases a broader shift in material expectations. The RAUVISIO Riviera range which is developed through a co-extrusion process combining PMMA & ABS, delivers high-gloss and super matt finishes with consistent colour depth and surface uniformity. Engineered to resist scratches along with chemicals and UV exposure – the material is suited to high-use environments while remaining compatible with standard woodworking processes. Alongside this, the RAUVISIO crystal range extends the application of glass-like finishes into furniture design. As a polymer-based laminate system – it offers the visual clarity associated with glass while providing greater impact resistance and lower weight. Its layered construction ensures dimensional stability while compatibility with precision edgebands makes way for a seamless free-flowing finish across panels.

Storage solutions have also undergone a shift towards integrated systems. REHAU’s RAUVOLET Vetro Line 2.0 is a prime example of the same. Afterall, it is the world’s first plug-and-play glass roller shutter system, combining toughened safety glass aesthetics with a ready-to-install cassette format. The system enables smooth vertical movement alongwith optimised space utilisation and resistance to heat and moisture. In compact kitchens and contemporary workspaces, it offers a more efficient alternative to conventional shutter mechanisms while maintaining a clean visual profile. REHAU’s roller shutter range is a classic example of the company’s German legacy and state of the art engineering.

A continued focus on research and development is what keeps fueling the laminate giant’s aspirations. REHAU’s material innovations are driven by its extremely skilled in-house teams comprising polymer specialists along with chemical engineers working on advanced formulations tailored to varied climatic conditions. This ensures consistent performance in environments where heat alongside humidity & intensive usage can impact material behaviour.

Commenting on the milestone, Mr. Tushar Verma, Executive Vice President, REHAU India & Subcon, said, “Over the past twenty five years, REHAU’s journey in India has been shaped by a consistent focus on engineering discipline and material reliability. We have worked closely with architects, OEM partners and manufacturers to bring precision into everyday furniture applications. As the industry continues to grow, our focus remains on strengthening local manufacturing, besides advancing material innovation and supporting long-term performance across interior solutions.”

As REHAU India enters its next phase of growth, the company continues to invest in manufacturing capability, material science and industry partnerships, continuing to build upon its role in shaping the future of furniture and interior solutions in India.
