Does Coffee Contain Cockroach?

While cockroaches are not put intentionally in coffee, there can be trace amounts that are unavoidable during the production process

For food items that come in packets, we usually trust them with full confidence. However, contamination is unavoidable when you consider the long-drawn production process. Raw materials are sourced from farms, from where they travel hundreds or thousands of kilometers, stored in large facilities, before getting in their final packaging in big factories. Something similar can be seen with coffee production. Many reports published recently have stated that coffee has cockroaches. To understand if this is true or not, let’s get more details on this topic.

Not intentional, but unavoidable

Truth can be distorted to set a completely different narrative. Something similar could be happening with specific reports that claim that coffee has cockroaches. The reality is that cockroaches in coffee are not intentional. It is just an unavoidable aspect of modern day production, where large quantities of raw materials are processed on a daily basis. As a matter of fact, various other insects could be present in food items in trace amounts.

Food safety regulations in various countries have clear mandates for how much natural contaminants can be present in food items. This essentially highlights the limitations of large-scale production processes, which are designed to meet the needs of millions of consumers. In a home setting, it is easy to grind your own coffee since the amount is quite less. But when you look at factory-scale production, the processing involves hundreds of tons of coffee.

Cockroaches and other insects in coffee can get mixed at various stages such as in farms and during harvesting, when stored in large warehouses and during processing. Even with advanced machines used in coffee production, it is impossible to detect and remove each and every cockroach or insect. Rigorous quality checks are performed at every stage to ensure that the contaminant percentage remains below the levels mandated by food safety regulations.

Since the cockroach / insect proportion in coffee and other food items is in trace amounts, it does not create any health issues in most people. Coffee is widely consumed daily by millions of people without any adverse effects. The only group of people at risk are the ones with severe cockroach allergies. However, this is rare.

Does coffee have 10% cockroaches

This is another viral discussion on social media, where reports claim that coffee has 10% cockroaches. Since the color of cockroaches matches that of the coffee, such reports seem even more believable. The 10% cockroaches in coffee allegation stems mainly from a wrong interpretation of FDA rules. The FDA rule is for green coffee, where the provision is for 10% of the insect-damaged crops to be rejected or reconditioned.

This 10% rule applies on the entire crop. But some reports take a misleading approach by assuming 10% of cockroach presence by weight. This is a totally false and misleading narrative, likely to get views and likes on social platforms. Moreover, the 10% insect-damaged crop rule related to pests like coffee berry borer beetle and coffee bean weevil. It is not about cockroaches, since these are not listed as incidental pests.

With the above facts, it is clear that your coffee does not have intentional cockroach mixing. Any trace amount that may be present is an unavoidable part of large-scale production process and strictly regulated by food safety organizations. All food items have trace amounts of insects, mold, rodent hairs, etc., which are strictly monitored and controlled as per food safety standards.
