Tata Steel Ludhiana secures India’s first BIS license for octagonal billet production

~ Octagonal billets offer higher surface area and higher metal yield compared to square and rectangular billets, with improved grain flow, better dimensional accuracy and lower wear on rolling mill equipment ~

Bengaluru, August 21, 2026: Tata Steel Ludhiana has been granted the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) License under IS 14650:2023 for the production of Octagonal Billets, making it the first steel producer in India to receive this certification.

The license is a recognition of Tata Steel Ludhiana’s robust manufacturing processes and quality systems for octagonal billets, which are used in the production of Tata Tiscon TMT rebars. The certified octagonal billets cater to a wide range of end-use sectors, including residential and commercial construction, infrastructure projects such as roads, bridges, metros, and airports, as well as industrial and power-sector applications.

Subodh Pandey, Vice President – Technology, R&D, NMB and Graphene, Tata Steel, said: “The BIS license is a significant validation of the capability we have developed at Ludhiana. It highlights Tata Steel’s continued focus on technological excellence and differentiated product offerings that contribute to a greener steelmaking ecosystem.”

The octagonal billet design improves material flow during rolling and enhances dimensional consistency of the final rebars. Compared to square and rectangular billets, octagonal billets have a higher surface area, resulting in better heat transfer and uniform cooling. Improved grain flow and structure lead to better strength, toughness, and ductility. More uniform deformation during rolling ensures better roundness and dimensional accuracy of the final products.

The design also delivers higher metal yield through lower corner losses and reduces wear on rolling mill equipment through more uniform rolling forces. Optimised material utilisation and energy efficiency support a greener steelmaking ecosystem.
