National Sports Day: Can You Exercise Through Pain? 6 Workout Symptoms You Should Never Ignore

Exercising is necessary to keep healthy, but trying to ignore certain signals can trigger a health crisis if not stopped in time. Professionals point out symptoms crucial to stop exercising.

Regular physical activity is associated with improved cardiovascular health, increased muscular strength and endurance, and positive influence on mental health. However, it is necessary to be able to differentiate what causes discomfort after working out and what requires immediate medical intervention. It is vital to know when its time to stop working out is.

1. Sudden or intense chest pain

Chest pain, pressure, tightness, or squeezing during exercising is a signal not to be ignored. It might be a sign of a condition affecting the heart and could be followed by the feeling of shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, dizziness, or spreading pain in the shoulder, jaw, or back. In such case, it’s necessary to stop exercising immediately and get urgent medical care.

2. Irregular Breathing

While it is logical to breathe heavily during vigorous physical activity, abrupt and abnormal difficulty in breathing, not being able to complete a sentence due to breathing problems, as well as problems with breathing after finishing exercising are alarming signs. Exercisers experiencing any of the symptoms should stop exercising and see a doctor.

3. Dizziness or Loss of Consciousness

Becoming dizzy or losing balance during exercising is not something to simply ignore. This condition may indicate dehydration, low blood sugar, overheating or a severe heart condition. Stop training and seek medical help if this phenomenon is serious and does not seem explainable.

4. Intense Joint Pain

Fatigue of the muscles and a little pain after exercising can be considered normal, especially after an increase in exercise load. Sharp pain in the knee, ankle, shoulder, hip or any other joint signals that something is wrong. Continuing to exercise during a painful episode can provoke worsening of the sprain, strain or any other injury. Continuous pain, swelling of the area or limitation in movements should be treated as a signal for medical consultation.

5. Abrupt muscle debilitation or disarray of coordination

If any part of the body becomes weak in an instant, movements turn out to be not coordinated in their normal way or if it is impossible to move a limb, the workout has to stop without hesitation. Newly emerged neurologic symptoms need urgent help and should not be neglected.

6. Persistent headache, lack of mental clarity and abnormal view of surrounding things

An abrupt strong headache while one is exercising is alarming, especially if the headache is accompanied by confusion and even loss of consciousness, or vomiting. Although headaches connected with exercise might not cause any harm, it is vital to undergo check-up if a person experiences a new headache or its intensity is higher than usual.

Listen to your body

Fitness should be acquired in a gradual way and without suffering at all. Warm-up, proper hydration, correct technique, enough period of rest and gradual increase of intensity will help minimise the risk of injury.
