AI as the Co-Pilot in Modern Supply Chains

AI’s role in supply chains is rapidly changing, from automation to intelligent augmentation. Today, generative AI is starting to act as a “co-pilot” that supports human decision-making, not replaces it. AI copilots are enabling faster, data-driven decision-making across logistics, fleet management, and operations, using natural language interfaces and real-time analytics.

As per global industry reports, Generative AI can reduce documentation lead times by up to 60% and logistics workload by 10-20%. AI-powered virtual dispatchers helped large fleet operators save $30-35 million. At the same time, AI is unlocking billions of dollars of value across transportation and logistics, with estimates of $190 billion in potential impact in the sector alone. In India, AI adoption is also accelerating rapidly, with the country’s AI market estimated to grow at a CAGR of 25-35% by 2027, driven by increasing digitization and AI adoption across logistics, manufacturing, and mobility sectors.

“AI is no longer a backend tool, it is becoming a real-time co-pilot for fleet and logistics operations. AI is augmenting human decision-making by translating complex real-time data into actionable insights at the ground level,” said Mr Rahul Mehra, Co-Founder, Roadcast. “The future of supply chains won’t be fully autonomous but intelligently assisted, with AI working alongside operators to drive efficiency, predict disruptions and enable faster, smarter decisions”, he added.

Though the improvement of supply chain agility and resilience significantly increases efficiency with AI. AI copilots help to consolidate data into one place, forecast a disruption, discover the most efficient route, and offer timely, actionable information when needed.

With an 88% utilization rate, however, only 39% of companies have been able to account for any sort of measurable return/financial impact from using AI. This suggests that the real value of using AI lies in integrating AI into workflows as a partner for providing assistance in making decisions, not as an independent tool for making decisions.
