Groin Hernia: An Ignored Diagnosis In Women

Hernias are not only seen in men but even in women. Yes, you have heard it right! Groin Hernia is a problem that a majority of women suffer from. Did you know? Groin Hernias in women can be termed as weaknesses or defects in the groin area where the intraabdominal structures that are fat or bowel tend to protrude, c bulge, and/or pain, or lead to serious complications. One can have issues such as incarceration or strangulation of the bowel requiring emergency treatment.

Various factors such as obesity, heavy lifting, chronic cough, chronic constipation, multiple pregnancies, and family history are the risk factors for developing hernias. There are various types of groin hernias that are seen in women. Indirect inguinal hernia (is commonly seen in females, direct inguinal hernia, and femoral hernia (below the groin region, common in women compared to men). There are a majority of women who tend to suffer from this problem but there is a lack of awareness regarding it.

The symptoms : This type of hernia will be seen without any red flags. Hence, the diagnosis will be delayed. Are you aware? Women may have smaller hernia defects and could present only with groin pain. These hernias in women can lead to minor discomfort to agonizing pain which increases with physical activity, strenuous activity, lifting, coughing, sneezing, and standing or sitting too long. The hernia will be discomforting, there will be a feeling of pressure, pins, needles or burning sensation, or sharp pain in the groin area. Thus, a woman will not be able to concentrate on her daily activities. A large number of women will also experience worrisome pelvic and lower belly pain.

The diagnosis : If a woman has pain in the lower abdomen or groin region then the expert should conduct a physical examination to confirm the diagnosis of a hernia. Once the diagnosis is confirmed then the doctor will suggest an appropriate line of treatment.

The treatment : You will have to either opt for minimally invasive surgery, including robotic and laparoscopic techniques. The groin hernias in women should not be neglected or taken lightly at all. One should immediately seek treatment for hernia repair and improve his/her quality of life. This will help you to avoid pain and discomfort of any sort. So, women try to be proactive when it comes to their health and take every step to improve it.
