Modern lifestyles have provided a lot of comfort and pleasure to the senses, but they have also resulted in a number of diseases. One such disease that is becoming increasingly rampant is fatty liver disease. It is normal to have some fat in the liver, but when the fat percentage in liver is more than 5 to 10 per cent of the weight of liver, it is likely to be fatty liver disease. A new research has revealed that the presence of certain bacteria in the gut may be responsible for fatty liver disease. There is also evidence that healthy foods such as organic curd / fresh tasty dahi can help prevent fatty liver disease. These foods have good bacteria that fight and eliminate the harmful microorganisms in the gut.
There are two types of fatty liver disease – 1) Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) and 2) Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). ALD is caused by alcohol consumption and can be treated by quitting alcohol. NAFLD can occur due to a variety of reasons such as being overweight or obese, high cholesterol, diabetes, viral hepatitis, autoimmune or inherited liver disease, malnutrition, and rapid weight loss. Some research studies have gathered evidence showing that certain types of harmful bacteria in the small intestine may be responsible for NAFLD. To further verify these results, a new research study was conducted involving adults who were diagnosed with NAFLD. Study participants were asked to consume organic curd / fresh tasty dahi for eight weeks, after which a variety of tests were performed.
It was found that the consumption of organic curd / fresh tasty dahisignificantly improved the functioning of liver enzymes and also reduced cholesterol levels and low-density lipoprotein. Based on these results, the researchers concluded that the good bacteria in organic curd can reduce the risk of NAFLD. This was an important study and it was published in the “Journal of Dairy Science” in the December 2014 edition.
One should not ignore fatty liver disease since it can cause a variety of complications and can even be fatal, if not treated in time. Moreover, the quality of life will also be impacted, as one will experience symptoms such as tiredness, loss of appetite, weakness, nausea, confusion, poor judgment, trouble concentrating, etc. Since no medication is currently available for NAFLD, it would be better to deploy preventive measures such as eating healthy food, regular exercising, and including organic curd / fresh tasty dahi in the diet. One can thus become healthier and live life to the fullest.
