Persistent Headache Leads to Discovery of Rare Skull Tumour; Timely Treatment at Wockhardt Hospitals Mira Road Ensures Successful Recovery

Mumbai: Wockhardt Hospitals Mira Road highlights the importance of recognizing persistent symptoms and seeking timely medical attention through a remarkable case in which a seemingly ordinary headache led to the diagnosis of a rare skull tumour. A 37-year-old man presented to the outpatient department at Wockhardt Hospitals Mira Road with complaints of a persistent left-sided headache that had not responded to routine over-the-counter medications. Despite the ongoing discomfort, he remained active and was able to carry out his daily activities without any neurological deficits, weakness, vision disturbances, or functional limitations.

Considering the persistence of the symptoms, specialists recommended detailed diagnostic evaluation. Advanced imaging investigations, including MRI, CT Scan, and PET Scan, revealed a small lesion on the left side of the skull. The lesion had caused localized erosion of the skull bone and demonstrated abnormal metabolic activity on imaging studies, warranting further investigation.

The case was subsequently reviewed by a multidisciplinary team comprising Neurologists, Neurosurgeons, Oncologists, Radiologists, and Pathologists at Wockhardt Hospitals Mira Road. Following comprehensive clinical assessment and laboratory investigations, the team recommended surgical removal of the tumour.

Using advanced CT-based neuronavigation technology, the neurosurgical team was able to precisely localize the lesion prior to and during surgery. Functioning much like a GPS-guided system for the brain and skull, the technology enabled surgeons to accurately target and excise the tumour—measuring no larger than a marble—while preserving the surrounding healthy tissues and minimizing surgical risk.

Commenting on the case, Dr. Nimesh Jain, Consultant Neurosurgeon, Wockhardt Hospitals Mira Road, said: “Headaches are among the most common neurological complaints and are often benign. However, persistent headaches, especially those that do not respond to conventional treatment or differ from an individual’s usual pattern, should never be ignored. In this case, timely evaluation enabled us to identify a rare tumour at an early stage, allowing for successful treatment. Advanced imaging, precision-guided surgery, and multidisciplinary collaboration played a crucial role in achieving an excellent clinical outcome. Early diagnosis remains one of the most significant factors in improving outcomes for patients with neurological conditions.”

The procedure was completed successfully, and the patient made an excellent recovery. He was discharged within three days of surgery and resumed normal activities shortly thereafter. Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis (LCH), a rare disorder characterized by abnormal proliferation of Langerhans cells, with an estimated incidence of approximately 1–2 cases per million people annually in adults. The patient continues to remain under regular follow-up with the oncology team for ongoing monitoring and management.

Specialists at Wockhardt Hospitals Mira Road urge the public to seek medical attention for persistent headaches, unexplained neurological symptoms, seizures, vision changes, balance disturbances, or any unusual health symptoms that persist despite routine treatment.

This case serves as an important reminder that seemingly minor symptoms can occasionally signal serious underlying conditions. Early diagnosis, timely intervention, advanced surgical expertise, and coordinated multidisciplinary care can significantly improve treatment outcomes and enhance the quality of life for patients affected by Neurological disorders.
