Researchers Combine AI and Biological Engineering to Discover Marine Bioactive Compounds

New Delhi, August 11, 2026: The world’s oceans cover more than 70% of the Earth’s surface, yet over 80% of the ocean remains unexplored, unobserved or unmapped, according to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). This vast and largely untapped environment is increasingly being recognised as a rich source of novel natural compounds with the potential to support the development of new medicines, sustainable materials and other high-value biotechnological applications.
Globally, researchers are increasingly leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) and synthetic biology to accelerate the discovery of marine natural products. By combining AI-driven data analysis with biological engineering, scientists are seeking to identify promising bioactive compounds more efficiently, better understand their properties, and develop sustainable ways to produce them without overexploiting marine ecosystems.

Against this backdrop, researchers from Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, are part of an international collaboration supported through the European Union’s Horizon Europe programme to advance the discovery of new marine natural products using AI and synthetic biology. The project will bring together researchers from multiple countries to integrate expertise in marine science, biotechnology and artificial intelligence, with the aim of accelerating the identification and development of valuable marine-derived compounds.

The initiative also highlights the growing importance of international collaboration in advancing next-generation biotechnology. By bringing together experts across disciplines and countries, the project aims to harness emerging technologies to unlock the untapped potential of marine biodiversity while supporting more sustainable approaches to natural product discovery.
