5 Companies Helping Women Build Independent Incomes in India

For generations, women’s financial independence has been shaped not just by ambition, but by access. Access to the right skills, workplaces, networks and, most importantly, opportunities that went beyond traditional roles. Even as more women enter the workforce, several sectors remain largely untapped because the pathways to enter them were simply not built with women in mind.

Today, that is beginning to change. Companies are not just hiring women for conventional roles; they are creating new pathways into industries and professions where women have historically had little representation. From automotive and technical services to entrepreneurship and rural livelihoods, these opportunities are helping women turn skills into income and income into greater independence.

This Independence Day, here are five companies creating unconventional and meaningful avenues for women to learn, earn and build careers on their own terms:

  1. ReadyAssist – Project Shakthi Opens Doors to Women in Auto-Tech

The automotive and roadside assistance industry has traditionally been male-dominated, but ReadyAssist is working to create greater opportunities for women through Project Shakthi. The initiative aims to train 300 women across 15 cities over two years for technical and field-based roles in the automotive service ecosystem.

Through technical training, hands-on exposure and flexible work opportunities, Project Shakthi is helping women explore careers in areas traditionally seen as male-dominated. The initiative also aims to provide women with an opportunity to build independent incomes and long-term careers within the mobility ecosystem.

  1. Mahindra & Mahindra – Connecting Women’s Skills with Jobs

Mahindra & Mahindra’s Project Kaabil focuses on bridging the gap between women’s education, skills and employment. The programme provides employability and domain-specific training across sectors including automotive, IT/ITES, healthcare, retail, hospitality and entrepreneurship.

In FY26, the Mahindra Group supported training for more than 4.6 lakh women through Kaabil, while its domain-skilling programmes focused on equipping women with industry-relevant skills for employment.

  1. Tata Power – Creating Local Livelihoods Through Skills

Tata Power’s women-focused initiatives combine vocational training with employment and entrepreneurship opportunities. Its Abha programme provides women with technical training and pathways into income-generating roles, while Anokha Dhaaga supports women-led micro-enterprises through skills, capacity building and market opportunities.

In FY26, more than 3,800 women were trained under Abha, with the programme enabling an average monthly income of ₹10,000–₹12,000 for participants.

  1. PepsiCo India – Taking Women from Skilling to Entrepreneurship

Through its RevolutioNari initiative, PepsiCo India, in partnership with Mrida Heart ’N Soil Foundation, is supporting rural women through a structured pathway from awareness and skilling to entrepreneurship and livelihoods.

As of February 2026, the initiative had mobilised more than 55,000 women across 272 villages in five states and Union Territories, with plans to expand to 1,000 villages and impact 1.2 lakh rural women.

  1. Adani Foundation – Building a Larger Women Entrepreneur Network

The Adani Foundation’s Swabhimaan programme is focused on enabling women to build sustainable livelihoods and entrepreneurial opportunities. In 2026, the Foundation announced an ambitious goal of enabling 10 lakh women entrepreneurs across India, building on its work in skills training, financial and digital literacy and enterprise support.

The initiative aims to connect women with skills and market-linked opportunities so that financial independence can translate into sustainable livelihoods.

Independence That Comes with an Income

From auto-tech and energy to entrepreneurship and rural livelihoods, these initiatives demonstrate that financial independence can begin with something as fundamental as access to the right skill and the right opportunity.

This Independence Day, the idea of freedom can therefore be looked at beyond a symbolic celebration to include the freedom to earn, choose, move, build and grow independently.
