7 Emerging Apprenticeship Roles in India’s EV Manufacturing Boom

India’s energy transition is being driven by the country’s ambitious goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2070, with electric vehicles (EVs) playing a crucial role in this shift. Backed by key government initiatives and significant investments in EV infrastructure and manufacturing, the sector is witnessing rapid growth. As automakers, startups, and energy companies accelerate their focus on sustainable mobility, the demand for skilled apprentices and professionals in EV manufacturing is also rising steadily across India.

Dr. Nipun Sharma, CEO, TeamLease Degree Apprenticeship, highlights seven emerging apprenticeship roles that are becoming critical in India’s EV ecosystem.

EV Battery Assembler
Responsible for assembling battery packs, lithium-ion cells, and related components used in electric vehicles. Apprentices learn battery fitting, wiring, testing, and safety procedures.

EV Motor Assembler
Works on assembling electric motors and related drivetrain components. The role involves fitting motor parts, testing performance, and ensuring proper alignment and functioning.

EV Charging Station Technician
Assists in the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of EV charging stations. Apprentices gain hands-on experience with charging systems, electrical connections, and safety checks.

EV Service Technician
Handles the diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of electric vehicles. This role includes inspecting battery systems, motors, wiring, and other EV components to ensure smooth functioning.

EV Production Line Associate
Supports manufacturing and assembly line operations in EV plants. Responsibilities include component fitting, quality checks, machine handling, and maintaining production efficiency.

Quality Check Technician
Ensures EV components and assembled vehicles meet quality and safety standards. Apprentices are trained in inspection processes, testing methods, and defect identification.

Wiring Harness Technician
Responsible for assembling and fitting electrical wiring systems in EVs. The role involves cable routing, connector fitting, and ensuring proper electrical connections across vehicle systems.

As India’s EV industry expands, apprenticeship opportunities are becoming a key pathway for building a skilled workforce. These roles provide practical industry exposure and hands-on technical training, helping young professionals prepare for careers in the growing clean mobility sector.
