Inside the ₹5,600 Crore Drug Scandal: Congress Faces a Growing Political Crisis

India’s biggest-ever drug seizure, involving ₹5,600 crore worth of narcotics in Delhi, has erupted into a major political controversy. The BJP has seized on the alleged involvement of a former Congress youth leader, intensifying the pressure. Congress, however, has categorically denied any connection to the case, while the BJP continues to push for answers from the party.

Beyond the politics, the drug bust represents a massive success for law enforcement. Authorities seized over 560 kg of cocaine and 40 kg of hydroponic marijuana in South Delhi, dismantling an international drug syndicate in the process. Among those taken into custody was Tushar Goyal, who is accused of orchestrating the operation. According to BJP spokespersons, Goyal’s connections go beyond his criminal activities, with assertions that he once held a prominent role as the RTI Cell Chairman for Delhi Pradesh Youth Congress.

This alleged link has sparked a political firestorm, with BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah, vocally questioning Congress’s role in the matter. PM Modi suggested that the Congress might be “leading the youth towards drugs” and potentially using illicit funds to fuel election campaigns. In a direct accusation, the BJP has insinuated that the drug money could be intended for the upcoming Haryana elections, a charge aimed at former Chief Minister Bhupinder Hooda and his political allies. The timing, so close to major state elections, has only added to the intrigue.

Are There Real Connections Between Congress and the Drug Syndicate?

The BJP’s most pointed questions center on Goyal’s alleged ties to Congress, demanding clarity on the matter. Leaders within the BJP are calling for a deeper investigation into Goyal’s role in the party, highlighting his recent position as the RTI Cell Chairman for Delhi Pradesh Youth Congress in 2022. Circulating photos of Goyal with top Congress figures have further fueled speculation and raised questions.

Could Drug Proceeds Be Intended for Election Use?

BJP leaders are also pressing the claim that drug proceeds might be directed toward election activities in Haryana. If this connection were confirmed, it would underscore a potentially troubling nexus between organized crime and political funding. Given that elections are imminent in four states this year, this possibility carries significant implications.

The Accusations and Congress’s Position

In response, Congress has denied any link to Tushar Goyal, dismissing the allegations as an attempt by the BJP to score political points before the elections.

The Delhi Police’s Special Cell is continuing its investigation into Goyal’s ties to the global drug trade. According to police reports, Goyal has extensive connections in the Middle East and is suspected of being a significant player in drug distribution networks across India. Should any link to Congress be substantiated, it would raise uncomfortable questions for the party at a time when it is looking to reclaim political ground in upcoming elections.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has also weighed in, warning the public of the “drug menace” that was prevalent during Congress rule, particularly in states like Punjab and Haryana. Shah contrasted drug enforcement during Congress and BJP tenures, suggesting that BJP efforts have been more robust. His statements, coupled with ongoing inquiries, continue to intensify the BJP’s criticism of Congress as this case unfolds.
