Fixing the System: Fadnavis Leads State Job Recruitment into an Era of Transparency

Since India’s independence, the Congress party has frequently highlighted its reverence for the Constitution and its architect, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar. However, many argue that Congress’s actions have often contradicted this stance. Critics accuse the party of selectively implementing Ambedkar’s constitutional principles, notably creating a separate constitution for Kashmir. They also argue that Congress has used the Constitution and Ambedkar’s legacy more as a campaign tool than a guiding framework.

Throughout various Lok Sabha elections, Congress leaders, including Sam Pitroda and iconic figures like Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, and Rajiv Gandhi, have faced scrutiny for their apparent opposition to reservations intended for disadvantaged communities. These provisions, designed by Ambedkar, aim to uplift these groups, yet Congress’s support for them has been inconsistent. In contrast, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has been committed to expanding reservation opportunities for the non-creamy layer of these communities.

Congress’s Reservation Stance

Rahul Gandhi has been particularly criticised for his comments suggesting Congress might end reservations altogether. The remarks didn’t receive extensive media coverage, and other Congress leaders have not strongly opposed this stance. Additionally, Nana Patole, Maharashtra Congress President, recently affirmed that the party considers phasing out existing reservations, stirring considerable backlash from SC, ST, and OBC communities.

In response, BJP leaders have questioned Congress’s authority to curtail these reservations, citing rising discontent within disadvantaged communities. These communities warn that Congress’s position on reservations will play a major role in their choices in the upcoming elections.

Impact on Dalit Communities

Despite claiming to uphold the Constitution, Congress has been accused of prioritising Muslim interests over those of Dalits. A statement from a prominent Congress leader declared that “Muslims have the first right over India’s resources,” sparking criticism from those who argue that the party has overlooked issues impacting Dalits during its tenures.

This controversy underscores a deep political and social divide, particularly among SC, ST, and OBC communities, who view Congress’s stance as a departure from Ambedkar’s vision of social empowerment through reservations.

The BJP, contrastingly, continues to assert its commitment to supporting these communities by preserving and expanding reservations. This approach stands in stark contrast to Congress’s alleged intention to reduce or eliminate these provisions.
