Breakthrough Minimally Invasive Heart Surgery at Narayana Health City, Bengaluru

  • India’s First Minimally Invasive Complex Heart Surgery Using Left Anterior Mini-Thoracotomy Performed at Narayana Health City
  • Innovative Technique Reduces Recovery Time and Enhances Patient Outcomes for Complex Cardiac Conditions

Bengaluru, January 22, 2025 – Doctors at Narayana Health City, Bengaluru, have made history by performing India’s first complex heart surgery using a minimally invasive method called the “left anterior mini-thoracotomy approach.”

This groundbreaking procedure corrected a serious heart condition involving a faulty mitral valve (a heart valve that sits between the left atrium and the left ventricle and is responsible for ensuring blood flow in the right direction) and a blocked coronary artery. Unlike traditional surgeries, which require large chest incisions, this method uses a small cut between the ribs, ensuring less pain, faster recovery, and minimal hospital stay.

The patient, a 66-year-old man with diabetes and high blood pressure, had been experiencing breathlessness and palpitations for months. Thanks to this innovative surgery, he spent just one day in the ICU, was discharged in three days, and was able to resume normal activities within two weeks.

The surgery, which lasted four hours, was a meticulous effort by Dr. T Kumaran, Senior Consultant, Cardiac Surgery- Adult, Narayana Health City, Bengaluru, and his team. “This approach reduces risks such as excessive blood loss, severe post-operative pain, and extended hospital stays, making it an ideal choice for patients needing quicker recovery,” said Dr. Kumaran.

This achievement signals a new era in heart care in India, promising better outcomes for patients with complex heart conditions.
