Some actors play the villain. Antony Starr becomes him. He terrorized the world in a cape as the chillingly charismatic Homelander in The Boys, which catapulted him to global fame and earned him a place in the pantheon of unforgettable screen villains. Now, the actor doubles down on his reputation for delivering menacing antagonists with Prime Video’s Original film G20, where global diplomacy meets high-stakes action. As Rutledge, a radicalized ex-soldier leading a violent siege on world leaders, he steps into another morally murky, psychologically layered role. Opposite Academy Award-winner Viola Davis, who plays the United States President Danielle Sutton, Starr proves once again that great heroes are only as powerful as the villains they’re up against.
In G20, when a global summit spirals into chaos and world leaders are taken hostage, the crisis becomes more than a geopolitical standoff – it turns into a clash of ideologies, egos, and buried scars. At the center of the storm is Starr’s Rutledge, who emerges as a complex force shaped by personal pain and societal betrayal, forcing the story’s hero to rise to her most formidable self.
Viola Davis, who also serves as the film’s co-producer, was blown away by Antony Starr’s commitment to the role. She shares, “You cannot put a price tag on an actor who’s fully committed and fully capable — and that is Antony. He brought such authenticity. Best of all, he was always unafraid to challenge the script in ways that made it better.”
Director Patricia Riggen knew she needed an actor who could exude danger and depth in equal measure. She explains, “We created a backstory for Rutledge that humanizes him, that allows us to almost understand him, which makes this villain appealing and disturbing. He’s also a victim in some ways. We don’t justify his evil actions, but the stronger your villain is, the stronger your hero must be.”
Starr sees his character as a man twisted by loss and disillusionment. He highlights, “Patricia and I explored a lot of layers in his backstory. Since returning from the war, he has isolated himself from friends and family. The feeling that he has been left behind has radicalized him. Now his mission is two-fold: He believes he is fighting back on behalf of all the people who feel left behind, but there’s also a startling personal motive.”
Directed by Patricia Riggen, G20 is written by Caitlin Parrish and Erica Weiss, alongside Logan and Noah Miller, who also developed the story. Produced by Andrew Lazar, p.g.a., Viola Davis, and Julius Tennon, the film is a collaboration between Amazon MGM Studios, MRC, Mad Chance Productions and JuVee Productions. The action-thriller boasts a stellar ensemble cast, led by Viola Davis, along with Anthony Anderson, Marsai Martin, Ramón Rodríguez, Douglas Hodge, Elizabeth Marvel, Sabrina Impacciatore, Christopher Farrar, and Antony Starr in key roles. G20 is set to premiere worldwide on April 10, exclusively on Prime Video.
