Zomato and Uber collaborate with MoRTH to support the “Sadak Suraksha Abhiyan” campaign for road safety

Bengaluru, September 11, 2025: Zomato, India’s food ordering and delivery platform and Uber, India’s most loved ride-hailing app, have joined hands with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) to drive awareness and public engagement for the nationwide initiative – Sadak Suraksha Abhiyan. With millions of trips and deliveries taking place every day, this partnership aims to highlight road safety as a national priority and inspire both drivers and consumers to make responsible choices that can save lives.

The announcement was made in New Delhi in the presence of Shri Nitin Jairam Gadkari, Hon’ble Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Government of India; and, Shri Prasoon Joshi, an acclaimed writer, poet and the conceptualiser of the Sadak Suraksha Abhiyan; alongside Mr. Aditya Mangla, Chief Executive Officer, Zomato, and Mr. Sooraj Nair, Head of Safety Operations, Uber India & South Asia.

This strategic collaboration highlights a shared commitment to public safety and is designed to influence behaviour at scale – encouraging drivers and delivery partners to follow traffic rules and make responsible choices on the road, while urging passengers and customers to avoid rushing them. By bringing together the combined reach of Zomato and Uber, the campaign conveys that road safety is a shared responsibility, and every individual has a role to play in saving lives. Through this collaborative effort, MoRTH, Zomato and Uber aim to reduce road accidents, and make roads safer across India.

As part of this initiative, both companies are integrating this message into their platforms.  Zomato will  disseminate road safety messages via its delivery partner app, and its consumer-facing food delivery platform. Uber is investing in driver education, and will build awareness within its rider community to reinforce safe practices. The campaign will also be extended across social media platforms and digital channels to maximize reach and impact.

Speaking at the launch, Shri Nitin Gadkari, Hon’ble Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Government of India, said: “Road safety is among our nation’s most critical priorities. This initiative is aimed at saving lives by fostering safer driving habits across the country. We welcome the support of companies like Zomato and Uber, whose collaboration helps extend this message to millions of Indians in their daily journeys.”

Through this initiative, Zomato reinforces its commitment to the safety and well-being of delivery partners through a range of measures. Before they begin delivering, every partner undergoes mandatory safety briefings with a focus on helmets, discipline, and responsible riding. Each day starts with a safety pledge that reinforces their responsibility to keep themselves and others safe on the road. On duty, they are supported with real-time weather updates and precautionary alerts powered by Zomato’s weather-union technology, along with a 24×7 in-app SOS feature that enables ambulance support within minutes during emergencies. To provide an added layer of protection, all partners are covered under comprehensive insurance. Responsibility deserves recognition as much as efficiency, which is why Zomato also celebrates partners who uphold road discipline and step up as first responders during roadside emergencies.

Uber is reinforcing its commitment to road safety through equitable policies for drivers and riders. A new ‘Road Safety Pledge’ is being rolled out for drivers, combined with investment in driver education on traffic rules and responsible road behavior. Uber has also introduced ‘Speeding Alerts’ and ‘Dangerous Driving Notifications’, which use GPS and telematics data to detect patterns such as hard braking, over-speeding, or sharp turns, and provide corrective feedback. Additional safety features include a 24×7 Safety Line answered within seconds by trained agents; an in-app SOS button linked directly to police control rooms with live trip information; AI-driven helmet checks and rider nudges for bike trips, rear seatbelt reminders in cars; and the RideCheck feature that proactively detects trip irregularities. Drivers across vehicle categories are also protected by accident insurance, covering capital benefits and accidental medical expenses. Riders can opt-in for affordable accident insurance too.

Aditya Mangla, CEO, Zomato, said,Our delivery partners and customers are at the heart of everything we do, and their safety is paramount. Through our support of MoRTH’s ‘Sadak Suraksha Abhiyan’, in partnership with Uber, we aim to amplify a message that’s both simple and powerful: safety must always come before speed. Slowing down and riding responsibly isn’t just a personal choice – it’s a life-saving one. Together, we can make our roads safer for everyone.”

Sooraj Nair, Head of Safety Operations, Uber India & South Asia, said, “At Uber, safety is not just a feature – it is a core value of our platform. We believe our work on safety never stops – every trip we power comes with technology, training, and policies designed to protect both riders and drivers. By working with MoRTH and Zomato, we are taking this commitment to the next level, using our scale to embed safer habits and responsible choices into millions of everyday journeys. Road safety in India demands collective action, and Uber will continue to lead from the front in making our cities safer for all.”

Building on the third edition of ‘Sadak Suraksha Abhiyan’, Uber and Zomato are reinforcing their commitment to embedding safety into millions of everyday journeys – propelling India closer to its goal of halving road fatalities by 2030.
