Due to reports of large scale movement of illegal migrants into India, it has become necessary to clean up the voter list
India is facing major challenges due to the entry of illegal migrants. Their numbers easily run into hundreds of thousands as per multiple reports. Many illegal migrants often manage to get Aadhaar cards and even voting rights and passports. This is being viewed as a major security risk for the country. One of the major actions being taken is the SIR, which is being handled by the Election Commission of India (ECI). Let us check out more details about SIR.

What is SIR? What is SIR full form?
SIR full form is Special Intensive Revision. SIR is a special and rigorous verification of the voter’s list. The primary goal is to achieve a clean, accurate and pure electoral roll. It is an exercise to ensure that all eligible voters are included in the voter list and all ineligible persons are removed. The last time SIR was conducted was in 2002.
The power to conduct SIR has been provided to the ECI, as per the Constitution of India. That is why objections to SIR by specific political parties are not having any real impact on the SIR process. ECI has already completed the SIR process in many locations. For the remaining states, the SIR is currently being conducted.
With SIR, the ECI has multiple objectives. In addition to the removal of illegal migrants, the goal is also to remove duplicate registrations, unreported deaths and inclusion of new voters who are eligible.
What is SIR process?
In the SIR process, Booth Level Officers (BLOs) are required to carry out house-to-house verification of people in the voter list. Special camps are also organized in many residential areas, where voters can take part in the SIR process. Voters are given Enumeration Forms and fresh details are collected to verify eligibility. The ECI will cross-check your data with previous records.
If your name is deleted or if you get a notice from the ECI, you can file your complaint. You can also file a new application, which can be Form 6 (inclusion), Form 7 (objection/deletion), or Form 8 (correction). You will have to provide the relevant documents such as Aadhaar, Voter ID (EPIC), passport, driving license, ration card, birth certificate, etc., to prove age, identity, and residence.
The 2025-2026 SIR was announced on 27 October 2025 by the Election Commission of India. It is being carried out in phases. Once the new data has been checked and analyzed, the Draft Electoral Roll is published. Voters can then respond to any notices sent to them. Once this process is completed, the final Electoral Roll is published. This process has already been completed in many states. Some states are witnessing a delay, but finalization of the Electoral Roll is expected soon.
For more information, you can get in touch with your Booth Level Officers (BLO). You can check your name in the voter’s list via voters.eci.gov.in. It is important for voters to participate actively in the SIR process. This will ensure that any mistakes could be corrected and your name remains on the voter list.
