HOTELS BACK SMOKE-FREE INDOORS AND SENSIBLE, DESIGNATED OUTDOOR SMOKING AREAS

11 May 2026
The Australian Hotels Association (WA) today reaffirmed the sector’s long-standing commitment to smoke free indoor spaces and dining areas, while supporting the continued use of clearly designated, well‑separated outdoor smoking areas.
AHA(WA) CEO Bradley Woods said “Hospitality venues want everyone to feel welcome and comfortable. WA hotels and pubs are proudly smoke free indoors and in dining areas, and we’ll keep it that way,”
“Allowing designated outdoor smoking zones is a practical balance that protects non-smokers and staff, reduces conflict and clutter on footpaths, and respects responsible adult choice.”
“Our members already apply strong measures, thoughtful layouts, separation buffers, clear signage and service rules such as no food service within smoking zones to keep exposure low and experiences high.”
“Importantly, venue operators already have the ability to make their businesses entirely smoke free if they believe it best suits their venue and customers, and some venues have already chosen to do so — reflecting that operators understand their patrons, layout and trading environment better than anyone.”
The AHA(WA) says that the current approach is working for patrons, staff and venues, from CBD bars to suburban and large regional beer gardens. Retaining clearly defined outdoor smoking areas:
  • Protects patrons and staff by separating smoking from indoor areas and diners.
  • Keeps smokers off public footpaths, reducing litter and congestion for passers‑by and neighbouring businesses.
  • Improves compliance and patron management with clear signage and boundaries.
