Digi Yatra Adds Driving Licence as a Verified Identity Credential

Passengers can now enrol in Digi Yatra using either Aadhaar or Driving Licence, offering greater flexibility while upholding Digi Yatra’s privacy-first approach

Bengaluru, 4th August 2026: Digi Yatra, India’s decentralised digital identity platform and a Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI)-based ecosystem for contactless and seamless passenger processing at airports, has introduced Driving Licence (securely accessed through DigiLocker) as an additional verified identity credential in the Digi Yatra App.

Existing Digi Yatra users can add their Driving Licence as an additional verified credential in their Digi Yatra Wallet, while new users can choose to enrol using either their Aadhaar or Driving Licence. Passengers who have both credentials in their wallets can select either as their Primary Credential, which is used to match the passenger’s name with the boarding pass and enable seamless movement through airport checkpoints.

With over 23.6 crore Driving Licence holders across India, the integration broadens access to Digi Yatra’s digital identity ecosystem and gives passengers greater choice in how they establish their identity for air travel. It also marks another milestone in Digi Yatra’s product roadmap that has been underway since October 2025, to support multiple government-issued identity documents as verifiable credentials within its decentralised Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) architecture.

The Driving Licence is securely accessed through DigiLocker with the user’s consent, remains encrypted, and is stored only on the passenger’s device.  No personally identifiable information (PII) is stored in any central repository, and use of the platform continues to be entirely voluntary, reinforcing Digi Yatra’s privacy-by-design framework.

Digi Yatra is designed to support multiple trusted identity credentials, allowing government-issued identity documents to be securely used while keeping users in complete control of their personal information. Whether passengers choose Aadhaar or Driving Licence, our core principles remain unchanged – privacy by design, user consent and decentralised identity. Data stays on the user’s device, sharing happens only with consent, and the travel experience remains seamless from Airport entry to boarding gate.”

Digi Yatra is currently operational across 39 airports in India. The platform has recorded over 25.5  million app downloads and facilitated more than 105 million seamless passenger journeys, reflecting strong voluntary adoption and growing passenger confidence in the system.

Building on this momentum, Digi Yatra is preparing to commence live international trials following the successful completion of an IATA-aligned international travel proof of concept. The platform, which currently supports 11 regional languages, is on track to support all 22 scheduled Indian languages by 2027, alongside expansion to 26 additional airports over the same period. These initiatives further strengthen Digi Yatra’s position as trusted digital identity infrastructure for air travel while preserving privacy, security and user choice.

Digi Yatra will continue expanding its digital identity ecosystem in line with its international roadmap, including support for passport-based verifiable credentials, while maintaining its privacy-first architecture.
