Akshaibar Lal

Akshaibar Lal is an Indian politician and a Member of Parliament (MP) from the Lok Sabha constituency of Bahraich in the state of Uttar Pradesh. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. The Bahraich Lok Sabha constituency is reserved for Scheduled Caste (SC) since 2008, as per the delimitation process. Prior to that, Bahraich was an unreserved constituency. It currently has five assembly constituencies – Balha, Nanpara, Matera, Mahasi, and Bahraich.

Akshaibar Lal has been in politics since several years. In 2019 Lok Sabha elections, he defeated Shabbir Ahmad of Samajwadi Party (SP) by a margin of more than 1 lakh 28 thousand votes. It was a significant win, as Lal was fighting against the ‘mahagathbandhan’ (alliance) of SP, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD).

Another notable aspect of 2019 Bahraich Lok Sabha elections was that the earlier MP Savitri Bai Phule, who had won in 2014 on BJP ticket, had switched to Congress. She had contested as a Congress candidate in 2019 Bahraich elections, but could garner only 34,454 (3.48%) votes. Savitri used to criticize BJP’s leadership and after she joined Congress, BJP chose Akshaibar Lal to contest the Bahraich constituency.

Prior to becoming a Lok Sabha MP, Akshaibar Lal had also been a Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) for five terms in UP.
