BIT Milano 2024, the international exhibition on innovation and sustainability in tourism, was held from Sunday 4 February to Tuesday 6 February at the Allianz MiCo Conference Centre. Among the exhibitors were Trenitalia, the lead company of the Passenger Business Unit of the Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane Group, and Fondazione FS.
Four main themes were examined: trends, sustainability, innovation and start-ups, to offer a global vision of a wide range of destinations and activities, with particular attention to people and the environment to ensure ever greater sensitivity to individual requirements.
Sustainability continues to be a key issue for decisions based on greater awareness and travel solutions that protect the environment and the economy.
Trenitalia was the official carrier of the exhibition, presenting a comfortable, sustainable and convenient travel experience for journeying between the main Italian cities.
The train plays a vital role in tourism, it is the world’s most environment-friendly means of transport while high-speed links deliver an increasingly efficient service.
Pietro Diamantini, General Manager of the Trenitalia High-Speed Division
For Trenitalia’s high-speed division, 2024 will be the year we show people that rail travel is not limited to intercity transfers, but that it can be enhanced with a wide range of seamless station-based services without waiting times, just as our customers require. For example, electric scooters, rental cars with drivers. Our app is open to all these services so that travellers can make the best use of their time. Naturally, with our trains as the core element of the journey.
Our country has enormous appeal to international tourism. Obviously, it doesn’t take much to tell people about little-known attractions of great value. It’s up to us, indeed, it’s our duty, to transmit their value. This is certainly a market that will grow and will greatly appreciate our wide and varied offer ranging from wine and food to wellness tourism. In other words, we really have something for everybody. This should be a value for all industries, manufacturing, transport, catering, hospitality, and we have to join forces. Italian National Tourist Board – ENIT – is really important in this regard, because we are working together. The Italian tricolour flag is our distinguishing characteristic, and we are honouring it in the best possible way.
Ivana Jelinic, ENIT (Italian National Tourist Board) CEO
It’s no coincidence that most tourists who choose the train are foreigners, but Italians are becoming more aware of its benefits too: lower environmental impact, greater efficiency, greater safety, avoiding travel by car means the train is a really excellent tool. High speed is an added bonus because distant locations can be reached in a short time, from one city centre to another.
Long live sustainability. This is why young people too have rediscovered the advantages of train travel. Nor are they scared any longer by the idea of intermodal travel with the famous Freccialink train and coach service, because coaches are once again seen as a friendly and sustainable means of transport, and especially well suited when travelling in groups.
