New Delhi September 8: On the occasion of Teacher’s Day, Chief Minister Mr Prem Singh Tamang attended the state-level celebrations at Manan Kendra and extended heartfelt tributes to Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, the former Vice President and President of India, as well as a distinguished philosopher, educator, and statesman. He also paid tribute to the teachers who laid the foundation of education in Sikkim, including those visionary educators who contributed significantly to the state’s educational landscape even before modern policies were implemented.
In his address, the Chief Minister, who is also a former teacher, shared his personal connection to education. He reflected on his early career in teaching and expressed his belief that teachers carry the hopes and dreams of their students. “The experiences I gained during my teaching years have shaped my understanding of the struggles teachers face daily,” said the Chief Minister. These lessons continue to guide me as I work to ensure that teachers are respected and empowered, he added.
The Chief Minister emphasized the important role teachers play in shaping society, the state, and the nation. “You are not just educators; you are the builders of our future,” he stated. “You guide students in their journey from ignorance to knowledge, and you plant the seeds of confidence, curiosity, and creativity, turning dreams into reality”, he further mentioned.
During the speech, the Chief Minister outlined the government’s commitment to improving the educational sector in Sikkim and emphasized that empowering teachers is at the heart of the government’s vision to transform the state into an Education Hub. He highlighted several key initiatives taken by the government to support teachers and improve the educational framework:
1. Fair Posting and Transfer Policy – In 2024, the government implemented a fair transfer policy, moving 1,063 teachers to ensure equitable distribution.
2. Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose University of Excellence.
3. Ad-Hoc Teachers’ Regularization Policy.
4. Khangchendzonga State University Campus.
5. Chief Minister’s Model Schools – New schools are being established in various parts of the state to enhance access to education.
6. Promotion Policy – A 30% reservation for promotions has been implemented, with 490 Heads of Institutes promoted so far.
7. Probationary Teacher Policy.
8. Sanchaman Limboo Government College, Geyzing 2022.
9. NIT Khamdong.
10. Apatan Fellowship.
11. NB Bhandari Fellowship for world top 20 universities.
12. Chief Minister’s Charter School.
13. Yoga for Mental Health.
14. Exposure trips for awarded teachers.
15. Sanskrit Teacher Regularization
16. Government In partnership with Thompson Digital, launched the Lakshya Center of Excellence for free coaching for competitive exams like IIT-JEE and NEET.
17. Chief Minister’s Mentorship Programme – Launched in 2024, this program will help guide and mentor students to success.
The Chief Minister expressed satisfaction over the progress made so far, with students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds aspiring to become doctors, engineers, and pilots. “I want to thank our dedicated teachers for making these dreams a reality,” he said.
Acknowledging the challenges faced by the education sector, including the closure or merger of schools across the country, the Chief Minister stressed the need to focus on quality over quantity in education.
He also emphasized Sikkim’s unique advantages, including its natural beauty, clean environment, hospitality, and peaceful atmosphere, which will play a vital role in positioning the state as an educational hub. He mentioned several upcoming initiatives, such as the establishment of the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose University of Excellence and the mission to make Sikkim 100% literate by 2027.
Looking ahead, the Chief Minister expressed his ambition to make Sikkim the center of education in India, with teachers playing a pivotal role in this transformation. “The cooperation between teachers, society, and the government will be key to our state’s progress and prosperity,” he concluded.
In his closing remarks, the Chief Minister called for deeper, lasting respect for teachers, stressing that they deserve more than superficial recognition. He highlighted the government’s commitment to working alongside teachers to make Sikkim a model for educational excellence
