Circular Economy Champions: 5 Indian Startups Closing the Loop on Waste

As per a recent finding by Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), India generates over 62 million tonnes of waste annually, with only 20% being treated and the rest dumped in landfills. With the country projected to become the third-largest generator of e-waste by 2026, the urgency to shift from a linear “take-make-dispose” model to a circular economy is louder than ever.

Moreover, as per a World Economic Forum (WEF) report, the global potential of the circular economy to be unlocked is touted to be an estimate of $4.5 trillion in economic benefits by 2030 and India stands to gain immensely, both environmentally and economically by embracing this transition.

Against this backdrop, a new wave of waste-tech startups is emerging, leveraging AI, IoT, blockchain, and digital compliance platforms to close the loop on waste. These aren’t just recycling companies—they’re ecosystem builders focused on Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), decentralized waste management, and digital traceability.

Here are the five startups spearheading the charge in making India’s circular economy not just aspirational, but achievable.

Elima

Elima is a waste-tech startup revolutionizing how India manages Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). With a tech-first approach, Elima provides end-to-end compliance, real-time tracking, and verified waste channelization for producers and brands. Its tailored solutions empower businesses to meet sustainability mandates while contributing meaningfully to India’s circular economy goals under Viksit Bharat 2047.

Recykal

Recykal is one of India’s pioneering digital waste management platforms, connecting waste generators, processors, and recyclers through a unified ecosystem. It leverages blockchain and AI to provide traceability and transparency in waste flows, enabling corporates and municipalities to meet EPR targets efficiently.

Attero is a global leader in e-waste recycling and urban mining, headquartered in India. The company recovers precious metals from discarded electronics using proprietary, sustainable technology. With clients ranging from Samsung to Apple, Attero has processed over 300,000 tonnes of e-waste and is expanding its footprint globally as a circular economy enabler in the rare earth and lithium-ion battery space.

Recyclekaro

Recyclekaro is a Mumbai-based cleantech firm specializing in lithium-ion battery recycling, e-waste, and metal recovery. Its zero-landfill policy and proprietary hydrometallurgical technology allow for eco-efficient material extraction. The company has gained attention for its ability to handle complex waste streams and is emerging as a key player in India’s clean energy and circular economy transition.

Switcheko

Switcheko is a climate-tech startup focused on electronics reuse and recycling. The company partners with OEMs and bulk consumers to extend the life of electronic products through refurbishing, resale, and responsible recycling. With its asset-light model and digital-first operations, Switcheko addresses both the digital divide and e-waste challenge—creating impact at scale across urban and rural India.
