CM attends Independence Day celebration in newly formed Soreng district

New Delhi, August 14: The 13th day of the district level celebration of the 77th Independence Day concluded at the Chakung playground, Soreng district today. Soreng is the newly formed district of Sikkim. Chief Minister of Sikkim PS Tamang attended the function along with his Cabinet Ministers, Zilla Adhakshya (Soreng district), MLA, other dignitaries and public at large.

Addressing the gathering, the CM said that, under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi, the Nation is thriving while bridging the gap between communities and states. PM Modi is leading the Nation with unity towards prosperity, he quoted. PS Tamang also praised the PM for his initiative of celebrating this year’s Independence Day with the innovative campaign of ‘Meri Maati Mera Desh’. He added that around 1147 ward in Sikkim will be participating in the MMMD campaign. Likewise, he also urged the audience to join in the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign under AKAM celebrations.

Walking through the memory lane of his political journey, he expressed his sincere gratitude towards the people of Chakung for showing confidence in electing him as their representative over years and added that he is forever indebted. Simultaneously, he also paid his due respect to all the former political leaders for their guidance in shaping his political career and giving him opportunities to grow.

The CM also took pride in informing that Sikkim has been ranked 3rd position among States with least poverty as per NITI Aayog’s Multidimensional Poverty Index at 2.08%. Adding to this, he said that Sikkim has been placed 2nd position among North East States and 5th position in the country in Happiness Index. Furthermore, he also enumerated some of the achievements of the State in the past 4 years, especially when the State was addressing the pandemic along with the world. And spoke on the government’s approach to development challenges.

His address also highlighted some of the requests of development projects put forth by people which included LD Kazi Recreational- Adventure ECO Tourism Centre & Museum at Chakung, Krishna Pranami Mandir at Tharpu, Parking Plaza and redevelopment of Soreng bazar.

Taking into the perspective of today’s demand for eco tourism, he encouraged all youths to explore entrepreneurship while taking the advantage of the available schemes and infrastructure.

In his concluding speech, he extended his sincere gratitude to the retired army personnel for their acts of valor in safeguarding the nation.

On the celebratory occasion, Ratna Bahadur Bhujel was awarded the Bravery Award for his act of valor in time of emergency.

The CM also distributed house up gradation to beneficiaries, laptop to 9 college students, letter of appointment in Government service to 86 beneficiaries, financial assistance to 41 students and to 8 Institutes under Chief Minister’s Discretionary Grant (CMDG).

The program also featured felicitation of dancer Mingma D Lepcha, singer Sisir Thatal and athlete Pritam Rai as a mark of encouragement and appreciation for representing Sikkim on International stage.
