Chandigarh, March 28, 2025: Anemia continues to pose a significant public health challenge in India, affecting millions across various age groups and demographics. Characterized by a deficiency of hemoglobin in the blood, anemia impairs the body’s ability to transport oxygen effectively, leading to fatigue, weakened immunity, and decreased productivity. Despite ongoing efforts to address this issue, the latest data from the National Family Health Survey-5 (NFHS-5), conducted between 2019 and 2021, reveals a troubling rise in anemia prevalence across the country.
The survey reports that 67% of children aged 6–59 months are anemic, up from 59% in the previous NFHS-4 survey. Among adolescents, 59.1% of girls and 31.1% of boys aged 15–19 years are affected. Women of reproductive age (15–49 years) show an alarming anemia rate of 57%, with pregnant women within this group experiencing a 52.2% prevalence. While men in the same age bracket fare better at 25%, these figures underscore the urgent need for targeted interventions.
Anemia Mukt Bharat: A Strategic Approach
In response to these alarming figures, the Government of India launched the Anemia Mukt Bharat (AMB) initiative in 2018, aiming to reduce anemia prevalence across various demographics. The strategy encompasses six key interventions targeting six beneficiary groups, implemented through six institutional mechanisms.
The Role of Double-Fortified Salt in Combating Anemia
A balanced diet rich in iron is crucial in preventing and managing anemia. Incorporating iron-rich foods such as leafy greens, legumes, and fortified foods can significantly improve hemoglobin levels. Additionally, the consumption of vitamin C-rich foods enhances iron absorption, further aiding in combating anemia.
An effective strategy to address iron deficiency anemia is the use of double-fortified salt (DFS), which combines both iodine and iron. This approach leverages salt—a universally consumed commodity—as a vehicle to deliver essential micronutrients.
Tata Salt’s Initiative: Tata Salt Iron Health
Recognizing the potential of DFS, Tata Salt has introduced “Tata Salt Iron Health,” a double-fortified salt enriched with both iodine and iron. This product aims to provide consumers with up to 25% of their daily iron requirement, thereby helping to combat anemia and to support overall well-being.
Collective Efforts Towards an Anemia-Free India
Addressing anemia requires a multi-faceted approach involving government initiatives, community participation, and individual action. Public awareness campaigns, regular health screenings, and nutritional education are pivotal in this fight. By working together and incorporating innovative solutions like double-fortified salt, we can strive towards an anemia-free India, ensuring a healthier and more productive population.
