How To Detect Hidden Cameras?

Technology has its benefits, but it has also created its own set of problems. One aspect of technology advancement is miniaturization, which offers numerous benefits in our daily life. Products like smartphones, compact laptops, smartwatches, etc. are some good examples. However, miniaturization is something that is also being misused.

For example, cameras have become so compact that they can be easily hidden away. There have been various cases where such cameras were used to record personal moments of people. Such recordings were either leaked online or used as a tool to blackmail the victims.

Such incidents can occur at any place such as hotel rooms, bathroom, Airbnb, homestays, etc. You really cannot trust anyone, as the act could easily be carried out by an employee without the knowledge of the hotel administration.

It brings up the question as to what you can do to protect your privacy. How can you detect hidden cameras? Well, here are some ways you can detect both wired and wireless, Wi-Fi-based hidden cameras.

Look for transparent objects – With their small size, hidden cameras can be easily installed anywhere. It can be in a smoke detector, wall decor, electrical outlets, lava lamps, wall sockets, wall clocks, stuffed toys, speakers, light bulbs, pen, charger and various other places. One advantage you have is that no matter how small, a camera will have a transparent lens. If you look closely, you can identify suspicious items.

Use your phone’s flashlight – A camera lens will reflect light, no matter how small it may be. You need to switch off the room’s light and shine your phone’s flashlight on suspicious objects. Move slowly as you are scanning, so that you do not miss out on small sized spy cameras.

Use an app – You can download mobile apps that have the ability to detect Wi-Fi cameras. These are available on both Google Play and App Store.

Camera detector – If you travel frequently and often have to stay at new places, you would do better by investing in a professional camera detector. These can detect both wired and wireless hidden cameras.

If you find anything suspicious, the best way to deal with the situation is to cover it with a towel or other cloth. In case of suspicious wired objects, you can simply unplug them and change their position. Later, you can take up the matter with police authorities. You should try to avoid direct confrontation, especially if you are new to that place.
