Narayana Health City Successfully Treats Rare Paediatric Case of Achalasia Cardia

Bengaluru, January 15, 2025 – Narayana Health City recently completed a highly complicated treatment of a rare paediatric case of Achalasia Cardia, a complex disorder of the oesophagus, led by Dr. Kiran R, Consultant, Medical Gastroenterology.

Achalasia Cardia, is a rare condition caused by the inability of the lower oesophagus to relax, making it difficult for food to pass into the stomach. An 11-year-old girl with Achalasia Cardia, experiencing persistent symptoms of recurring vomiting, significant weight loss of 5 kg, difficulty in swallowing, and regurgitation of gastric contents, and Dr Kiran diagnosed her suffering after a comprehensive evaluation.

Dr. Kiran treated this condition with a minimally invasive procedure known as Peroral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM). This advanced technique involves cutting the muscles of the lower oesophagus to restore normal swallowing function. The procedure was completed, and the patient has since shown remarkable improvement. She has regained her ability to tolerate food, gained weight, and experienced no further episodes of regurgitation.
