As we are aware, 2020 Tokyo Olympics has been rescheduled to 2021 due to Covid-19 pandemic. However, the original name “Tokyo 2020” has been retained for simplifying branding and marketing needs. Talking about 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, one of the key developments is that five new sports have been added to the list. This is in addition to the 28 sports already listed on the Olympic Programme. These new sports have been added in accordance with the evolving preferences of the audience. Baseball/Softball – In Baseball, a total of six teams will be competing at 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Japan gets automatic entry to both baseball and softball, as it is the host nation. The other teams that have qualified till now are Mexico, Israel and South Korea. Qualifying rounds for two more teams are yet to be held. In softball, the six teams are Japan, United States, Italy, Mexico, Canada and Australia.
Karate – This sport will make its debut for the first time at 2020 Tokyo Olympics. There will be a total of eight events and ten competitions for each event. There will be events for both men and women in various weight categories. The participating nations will be selected based on a quota system that will cover continents such as Oceanic, Africa, Americas, Asia and Europe.
Skateboarding – A total of 20 players will be chosen to participate in skateboarding at 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Apart from host nation Japan, 16 will be chosen from world rankings and 3 from World Championships. The skateboarding events will be held at the Ariake Urban Sports Park located in Tokyo, Japan.
Sport climbing – There will be a total of three formats for the game – bouldering, speed climbing and lead climbing. Players will have to participate in all three formats and the winner will be decided based on overall score in all three events. There will be separate events for men and women. A total of 20 contestants will be participating in sport climbing at 2020 Olympics.
Surfing – While most Olympic events are held in manmade structures, surfing is among the exceptions. That’s because surfing event at 2020 Olympics will be held in a real ocean and not in an artificial wave pool. The surfing event will be held at Shidashita Beach, which is located around 40 miles (64 km) from Tokyo.
