Tackling Air Pollution: CII and EMC Introduce Practical Emissions Reporting Guide for Businesses

New Delhi, December 04, 2024: The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), under its Cleaner Air Better Life initiative and in collaboration with the Environmental Management Centre (EMC), has introduced the Corporate Air Emissions Reporting Guide. This comprehensive resource provides businesses with practical solutions to monitor, quantify, and transparently report air emissions, contributing to the fight against air pollution in India.

Aligned with SEBI’s Business Responsibility and Sustainability Reporting (BRSR) framework and international standards like GRI and SASB, the guide provides step-by-step methodologies for scoping, monitoring, and consolidating emissions data. It covers pollutants such as particulate matter (PM), sulphur oxides (SO₂), nitrogen oxides (NOₓ), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Businesses are encouraged to integrate air quality goals into their sustainability strategies, fostering innovation and accountability.

Ms. Shveta Arya, Chairperson of the CII National Initiative Cleaner Air Better Life and Managing Director of Cummins India Limited, emphasised: “Air pollution is one of the greatest challenges of our time, but industries have the power to lead the way in creating cleaner air for all. This guide supports the vision of cleaner air by equipping businesses with the tools to take meaningful action. Together, we can foster transparency, innovation, and healthier communities for a sustainable future.”

Ms. Seema Arora, Deputy Director General, CII, added: “Transparent reporting is at the heart of tackling air pollution. This guide empowers companies to turn data into action, encouraging industry-wide accountability and collaboration. At CII, we believe in the collective strength of businesses to drive the change toward a cleaner and healthier environment for everyone.”

Key features include insights into emissions sources like combustion and industrial processes, guidance on using Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems (CEMS), and best practices for data assurance. By promoting transparency, the guide enables businesses to disclose critical pollutants and align their reporting with sustainability goals.
