Tectonic Shifts in Digital Trust as Google Pay Wins Digital Payments War defeating Four Time Winner PhonePe in TRA Brand Trust Report 2026

6 March 2026: Following the launch of the 15th Edition of TRA’s Brand Trust Report 2026, it has unveiled critical insights into the shifting landscape of consumer trust within the Digital sector. While the report crowned Amazon as India’s #1 Most Trusted Brand of 2026 overall, a detailed sector analysis reveals that trust is migrating rapidly, redefining leadership positions across key digital services. In one of the most significant upsets of the year, Google Pay has emerged as the most trusted brand in the Digital Payments category surging past its primary competitor PhonePe who has been winning since last four reports, marking a pivotal shift in the consumer trust within the fintech space.

The digital services landscape has seen a new hierarchy of trust, particularly for the Zomato group, which secured top honors in two distinct categories – Zomato has reclaimed its leadership in the online food delivery category defeating last year’s winner Swiggy whereas Blinkit has solidified its dominance, emerging as the top-ranked brand in the increasingly competitive Online Quick Delivery category.

Beyond the payment and delivery wars, several other digital brands demonstrated remarkable trust gains. While WhatsApp maintains its lead in messaging, Facebook showed the highest momentum in the social sector with a 60-rank climb.

YouTube remains the undisputed king of Video-Sharing with a spectacular 258-rank jump to Rank 210. Zee5 has emerged as the most resilient and top-ranked brand in the OTT specific category. This comes despite the category witnessing high volatility, highlighted by Zee5 navigating a 218-rank drop in the All-India listings to maintain its category leadership. The sector remains highly competitive with Netflix (Rank 539) and the newly entered Jio Hotstar (Rank 562) closely trailing, reflecting a dynamic shift in how Indian consumers distribute trust across streaming platforms.

Ola (Rank 383) continues to lead in the Online Ride Aggregator space and Reliance JioMart showed massive growth in Online Grocery Retail, jumping 142 ranks to Rank 112, followed by Big Basket which climbed 419 ranks to Rank 559. In the highly competitive Online Fashion Retailer category, Ajio (All-India Rank 213) has secured its position as the category leader. It is followed by Myntra, which demonstrated significant growth in trust by leaping 209 ranks to reach All-India Rank 397.

Mr. N. Chandramouli, CEO, TRA Research said, “The 15th Edition of TRA’s Brand Trust Report 2026 marks a watershed moment for India’s digital ecosystem. Trust is no longer a legacy advantage; it is a dynamic currency that must be earned through consistent consumer centricity. The dramatic shift in Digital Payments, where Google Pay surged 88 ranks to overtake PhonePe, and the Zomato group’s double-crown victory with Zomato and Blinkit, demonstrate that Indian consumers are rewardingly agile when brands align with their evolving needs.”

“As digital interactions become the primary touchpoint for trust, the winners are those who successfully bridge the gap between innovation and human authenticity, ensuring that as they scale, they remain fundamentally trusted by the citizens they serve”, he added.
