What Is Dor TV?

Dor TV’s story reveals that even the most innovative business ideas are only as strong as their execution

With growing preference for OTT platforms and wide screen viewing, Dor TV came up with a pioneering idea of combining these two needs into a single package. Dor TV was owned by Streambox Media, an entity backed by Micromax co-founder Rahul Sharma and Zerodha co-founder Nikhil Kamath.

Users who chose Dor TV could access both the hardware (Smart TV) and subscription for 25+ OTT apps, 300+ live channels and games. In this context, Dor TV is essentially a TV-as-a-service program, the first-of-its-kind launched in India. Let us get more details in terms of what is Dor TV.

OTT platforms available via Dor TV

Customers buying Dor TV subscription gained access to more than 24 OTT platforms including top names such as Amazon Prime Video, Sony Liv, JioHotstar, Zee5, SunNxt, Aha, Discovery+, Lionsgate etc. Initially, all subscription plans offered a 43-inch Smart TV, which was priced at Rs 10,799. This included free access to the OTT platforms, 300+ live channels and games for the first month. After the first free month, users were required to pay a monthly fee of Rs 799.

The Smart TV available with Dor TV subscription came with a warranty of four years. The company also promised four years of software updates. It is to note that Dor TV was using its own version of Android OS, which was marketed as Dor OS. In the future, the company was also planning to offer 55-inch and 65-inch Smart TVs to cater to specific user needs and preferences.

Users liked Dor TV, as the hardware and content were quite good. Moreover, they were getting everything in a single package and at affordable rates. The Smart TV has features such as Dolby audio, 4K QLED display, solar-powered remote, in-built Chromecast, screen mirroring, voice assistant, AI-based recommendations and in-built 40W speaker. Multiple ports are provided for easy access such as 3 HDMI ports, 2 USB ports and an Ethernet port. The TV also has inbuilt Bluetooth and Wi-Fi support.

Why Dor TV closed down?

Despite being a pioneering idea in the country, Dor TV shut down operations in May 2025. It is not clear exactly why Dor TV shut down operations. But reports point out that rising customer grievances could be a reason for the shutdown of Dor TV. For example, some users had reported software slowdowns and unavailability of OTT channels like Netflix and Apple TV.

All services related to Dor TV have been stopped, as communicated by the parent company Streambox Media Private Limited. Users will no longer be able to access Dor subscription service and Dor TV App. No updates or support will be provided for the Dor TV and the warranty also stands void. All types of customer support services have been discontinued. The only saving grace is that the Dor TV is unlocked and can be used like any other Smart TV.

The sudden shutdown of Dor TV has left users baffled, frustrated and angry. Many users who had chosen long-term subscription plans are now feeling cheated. However, no major steps have been taken along the legal channels. The Dor TV case study shows how bad execution and technical issues can harm innovation.
