While Tesla Model Y is hugely popular across the globe, its high pricing in India may prompt enthusiasts to consider other options
After several years of wait, Tesla has finally entered the Indian market with the Model Y. However, due to high import duty on CBU products, Tesla Model Y is available in the price range of Rs 59.89 lakh to Rs 67.89 lakh. In comparison, the price of Model Y in the United States starts at $37,490 (approx. Rs 32.39 lakh). For anyone thinking about buying a Tesla Model Y, there are various other alternatives in around the same price range. Let us take a look.
Kia EV6 GT Line AWD – Offering a range of 708 km (ARAI), the Kia EV6 GT Line AWD has a higher range than Tesla Model Y range of 622 km (WLTP). Users will also be able to access improved performance with the dual-motor AWD setup. Charging speed is pretty robust, with 10-80% achievable in just around 18 minutes when using a 350 kW DC fast charger. Kia also has a much wider sales and service network in comparison to Tesla. Kia EV6 GT Line AWD is priced at Rs 60.95 lakh, which is more accessible as compared to long-range RWD variant of Model Y (Rs 67.89 lakh).
Hyundai Ioniq 5 – This is priced much lower in the range of Rs 46 lakh to Rs 55 lakh. ARAI certified range is 631 km, which is slightly better than Model Y. Both RWD and dual-motor AWD variants are on offer. Ioniq 5 is suitable for family needs, offering a large boot space of 822 liters. Charging setup is similar to that of the Kia EV6. Ioniq 5 packs in a comprehensive range of premium features including Level 2 ADAS. It has received good reviews in terms of practicality, comfort and overall value.
Volvo XC40 Recharge – Sporting a gorgeous look with its signature Scandinavian design, the Volvo XC40 Recharge is available at a starting price of Rs 54.95 lakh. That is cheaper than both the standard and long-range variants of Tesla Model Y. XC40 Recharge has an ARAI certified range of 592 km. It is equipped with a 78-kWh battery pack and has a single motor RWD setup. The electric motor generates 252 hp. An extensive range of premium features are available such as Google built-in, panoramic sunroof, Level 2 ADAS and Pilot Assist semi-autonomous driving.
BMW iX1 LWB – At Rs 66.90 lakh, the pricing is comparable to that of Tesla Model Y. Equipped with a 66.4 kWh battery and dual-motor AWD setup, the BMW iX1 LWB offers a WLTP range of 440-474 km. The electric motor generates 313 hp of peak power. Acceleration is pretty good, with 0-100 km/h achievable in around 5.6 seconds. BMW iX1 LWB is suited for Indian roads, as it has a high ground clearance of 190 mm. Key features include panoramic glass roof, curved display, reclining seats, premium 2‑speaker 205 W Harman Kardon audio system and seats with memory function.
BYD Sealion 7 – Prices start at Rs 48.90 lakh, making the BYD Sealion 7 more accessible than the Tesla Model Y. With an 82.5 kWh battery, the range is around 500-600 km (ARAI certified). Both RWD and AWD variants are on offer, with power output of 308 hp and 523 hp, respectively. BYD Sealion 7 has better acceleration, with 0-100 km/h in 4.5 seconds. In comparison, the Tesla Model Y takes around 5 seconds. Key features include a 15.6-inch rotating infotainment screen, electric sunshade, panoramic fixed glass roof, 12-speaker Dynaudio, advanced HUD and ventilated and heated front seats.
