Why Drinking Water First Thing in the Morning Matters

The practice of drinking a glass of water right after waking up, no matter if it is warm or cold, is a very simple yet powerful habit whose health benefits are many. The body is usually dehydrated after 6 to 8 hours of sleep. Morning intake of water helps to rehydrate the cells, activating metabolism and getting the digestive and circulatory systems ready for the day. This habit is a great support for the body’s overall wellness, and its effects may be seen on digestion, energy and immunity positively.

Supports Digestion, Detoxification and Metabolism

The morning drinking water habit has one of the most significant advantages, which is better digestion. It is water that facilitates the activation of the gastrointestinal tract and encourages stool movements, thereby eliminating the occurrence of constipation and the sensation of fullness in the stomach. Hot or even warm water has a special effect as it not only soothes digestive muscles but also enhances blood circulation to the intestines, thus making digestion quicker.

And morning water drinking is one of the ways the body’s natural detoxification process is supported. Liver during the sleep hours is working to get rid of toxins, and drinking water in the morning aids the elimination of these waste products through urine and sweating. Proper hydration is also a support for kidney function and is very helpful in maintaining the balance of fluids and electrolytes in a healthy way.

The water drinking practice at the start of the day can result in a slight increase in metabolism, which means more calories will be burned at rest. The body is all set to absorb the nutrients more quickly, and also the feeling of fullness is such that it will prevent overeating later in the day. When combined with a balanced diet, this is claimed to be of use in weight management.

Improves Brain Function, Energy Levels, and Immunity

Even mild dehydration can lead to negative effects on the mind, mood, and energy levels. The first thing you should do in the morning is to drink a glass of water. This will wake your body’s circulation and, consequently, oxygen delivery to the brain, which will result in greater alertness, focus and clearer thinking. It will also help to get rid of the morning tiredness and headaches that are due to a lack of water during the night.

Proper hydration contributes to the body’s immune system. Water is indispensable for the lymphatic system functioning well, which is the way that transport of immune cells through the body is done. It produces saliva and mucus, which both help in the fight against the germs by forming the first line of defence. Moreover, drinking warm water may also relieve throat discomfort and reduce mucus production, particularly for those suffering from a cold or flu during the season.

Supports Skin Health and Heart Health

The practice of drinking water upon waking has a positive impact on skin health. This is because it promotes blood circulation and assists in the expulsion of toxins. Hydrated skin is less likely to lose its suppleness, is less prone to cracking, and can, over time, be seen as more radiant and rejuvenated. Water by itself cannot stop acne or wrinkle formation, but it is certainly a skin health contributor. As far as the heart and the circulatory system are concerned, water intake guarantees healthy blood volume and circulation. Taking a glass of water after awakening makes the blood a bit less viscous, which in turn causes less effort for the heart and allows for better blood pressure management. Hot water may be a facilitator of better blood flow, while cold water may be seen as more invigorating and refreshing by some people.

Both hot water and cold water have their own merits, and one of the most important factors here is still personal preference. Hot water or warm water is usually the most beneficial for digestion, detoxifying the body, and for relaxation in general, especially for people prone to constipation or bloating. However, cold or room-temperature water may be more refreshing and, therefore, also able to enhance alertness. Ultimately, the best option is always the one that takes into account one’s personal comfort, the weather and one’s health condition.
