SFLC, India launches Free Speech Tracker 2.0 to track censorship in India across literature, cinema, websites, applications, and more

55,607 websites in seven years (2015-2023)

Between 2020 and 2022, Indian government banned 274 applications

websites were banned in the country between 2015 and 2022. In response to these challenges, SFLC, India has developed the

Free Speech Tracker (FST) – a comprehensive platform designed to monitor and document instances of free speech violations across India. This initiative seeks to address the critical need for a centralized repository of information that supports the defense
and promotion of free speech. SFLC,India is launching a newer version of the Free Speech Tracker, on July 26th, 2024 to provide more cohesive data collection across various themes including bans on websites, movies, books, and art, alongside content blocking
on social media platforms.

The Tracker allows citizens, researchers, activists, and policymakers to use the repository to defend free speech in the country. Driven by a dedicated team of researchers and supported by public contributions, FST aggregates data from diverse sources, including
news reports and court documents, which undergo rigorous verification to ensure accuracy. It is important that given the confidentiality mandate under the Blocking Rules of 2009, the data is not exhaustive. Researcher, citizens and others can also contribute
to the initiative and report any other instances to the portal using the reporting mechanism available on the website.
