Fortis Hospital Mohali experts highlight timely consultation and lifestyle changes as vital to prevent disability and improve quality of life
Chandigarh, October 12, 2025: Arthritis, a condition causing inflammation in one or more joints, affects millions worldwide every year. Yet, it remains one of the most neglected and misunderstood disorders, often mistaken as a natural part of ageing, leading to delayed diagnosis and avoidable suffering.
Observed globally on October 12, World Arthritis Day aims to raise awareness about the condition and its impact. This year’s theme, “Achieve Your Dreams,” celebrates the resilience of people living with Rheumatic and Musculoskeletal Diseases (RMDs) and the importance of empowering them to lead fulfilling lives.
On this occasion, Dr. Anil Abrol, Consultant, Department of Rheumatology, Fortis Hospital Mohali, shared insights on the causes, symptoms, risks, and treatment options related to arthritis.
Understanding Arthritis:
Arthritis is not a single disease, but a group of over 100 disorders affecting joints, bones, and connective tissues. These include osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, lupus, vasculitis, gout and psoriatic arthritis.
Dr. Abrol explained, “Arthritis can affect people of any age group, including children, young adults, and the middle-aged population and it’s a misconception that only the elderly suffer from it. Ignoring the symptoms or attributing them to age can be dangerous. The longer one waits, the more difficult it becomes to control inflammation, prevent complications, and avoid irreversible joint damage. Early medical attention is therefore critical to improving long-term outcomes.”
Recognising the Symptoms – Common symptoms include:
- Pain and swelling in joints with early morning stiffness
- Low back pain and stiffness, especially in young men
- Joint pain associated with skin rashes or eye inflammation
Persistent pain or stiffness for over 4-6 weeks should prompt an immediate consultation with a Rheumatologist, rather than self-medication.
The Hidden Risks – Patients living with arthritis face higher health risks beyond joint pain:
- 200% higher risk of heart attack and 150% higher risk of stroke
- Greater vulnerability to depression, fatigue, and certain cancers
- Increased risk of joint deformities, disability, and loss of productivity
Importance of Early Diagnosis – “There is often a gap of nearly two years between the onset of symptoms and seeing a specialist,” said Dr. Abrol. “However, with early diagnosis, arthritis can not only be controlled but may even go into complete remission.”
Modern treatments such as Disease-Modifying Anti-Rheumatic Drugs (DMARDs) and biologic therapies have transformed arthritis management by controlling inflammation, halting disease progression, and preserving joint function, enabling patients to lead active, independent lives.
Prevention and Lifestyle Management : Dr. Abrol emphasized that lifestyle choices play a vital role in managing arthritis and preventing flare-ups. He advised:
- Maintain a balanced diet rich in anti-inflammatory foods (fruits, vegetables, omega-3s)
- Exercise regularly to strengthen muscles and improve flexibility
- Maintain healthy body weight to reduce joint stress
- Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol, which worsen inflammation
“Early diagnosis, medical compliance, and lifestyle balance can make a remarkable difference in living well with arthritis,” he concluded. “With proper treatment and awareness, patients can truly achieve their dream, the message of this year’s World Arthritis Day.”
