Mumbai, May 31, 2026: On the occasion of World No Tobacco Day 2026, Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road, joins the global movement to raise awareness about the devastating health consequences of tobacco and nicotine addiction. This year’s theme, “Unmasking the Appeal: Countering Nicotine and Tobacco Addiction,” highlights the growing concern over the tobacco industry’s aggressive targeting of children and young adults through deceptive products such as e-cigarettes, vapes, and nicotine pouches.
India continues to face a significant public health challenge, with more than 267 million tobacco users, making it one of the largest consumers of tobacco globally. Despite increased awareness, tobacco remains one of the leading preventable causes of cancer, heart disease, stroke, respiratory illnesses, and premature deaths.
Commenting on the occasion, Dr. Priyank R. Chawathe, Consultant Surgical Oncology & Robotic Surgery, Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road, said:
“As oncologists, we witness the devastating impact of tobacco every day. Tobacco contains thousands of harmful chemicals, many of which are known carcinogens that directly damage the DNA of healthy cells. This damage accumulates over time and significantly increases the risk of cancers of the oral cavity, tongue, throat, voice box, esophagus, lungs, pancreas, bladder, and several other organs. What is particularly alarming is that younger individuals are increasingly getting exposed to nicotine through modern products marketed as safer alternatives, when in reality they can become a gateway to lifelong addiction and serious health complications.”
He further added, “Many patients tell us they never imagined a small habit of chewing tobacco or occasional smoking could lead to a life-changing cancer diagnosis. The reality is that there is no safe form of tobacco consumption. Quitting tobacco at any stage can significantly reduce health risks and improve quality of life. Prevention, awareness, and early intervention remain our strongest weapons against tobacco-related cancers.”
On World No Tobacco Day 2026, Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road, urges individuals, families, educational institutions, and policymakers to work together to protect the younger generation from nicotine addiction and build a healthier, tobacco-free future for India.
