Arun Kumar Sagar

Arun Kumar Sagar is an Indian politician and a Member of Parliament (MP) from the Lok Sabha constituency Shahjahanpur in the state of Uttar Pradesh. Sagar is a member of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Shahjahanpur Lok Sabha seat is reserved for SC. It comprises assembly constituencies of Katra, Jalalabad, Tilhar, Powayan, Shahjahanpur and Dadraul.

In the last two decades, the constituency seat of Shahjahanpur has been won by different parties. For example, it was with BJP in 1998. In 1999 and 2004, the seat was won by Indian National Congress (INC). In 2009 election, Samajwadi Party (SP) won the election. In 2014, the seat was won by Krishna Raj of BJP.

In 2019 election from Shahjahanpur, BJP decided to field Arun Kumar Sagar as their candidate. The decision turned out to be the right one, as Sagar won by a comfortable margin of more than 2.68 lakh votes. This win was even more significant, as opposition parties like SP and BSP had fought the elections together. Sagar had defeated his nearest rival Amar Chandra Jauhar of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP).

Early Life and Education

Arun Kumar Sagar was born on May 01, 1976. He was born in Chawar Khas, Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh. Sagar has studied up to intermediate level and received education at Ramsharan Singh Vidhyalay Fulsanda, Bijnor, U.P. He and his father Shri Chhotey Lal Sagar are agriculturist by profession. Sagar married Smt. Roopa Sagar on May 16, 1993.

Political Career

Usually, politicians begin their career by winning in assembly elections. However, some politicians have been seen to directly win Lok Sabha election. Sagar is one such candidate. He had started his political journey with BSP. He was appointed as the party’s district president in 2006 for Shahjahanpur district unit. Later, he was tasked with the responsibility of vice-president of state construction corporation.

In 2012, Sagar got his first major opportunity when he was chosen to contest from Powayan assembly constituency. However, he came second, getting 24.5% of the votes cast. He was defeated by Sakuntla Devi of SP, who received 28.78% votes. In 2015, Sagar decided to switch to BJP. Subsequently, he was appointed as vice-president of Braj region unit. In 2019, he contested and won from the Shahjahanpur Lok Sabha constituency.
