Bargarh Man Beats 6-Year Drug-Resistant Hip Infection with Ortho and Infectious Diseases Care at Manipal Hospital, Bhubaneswar

Bhubaneshwar, 19th September, 2025: At 55, Mr. Bhaskar Mohapatra, a working professional from Bargarh, Odisha, never expected his life would spiral into six years of relentless pain, uncertainty, and despair — all because of a hip surgery gone wrong.

In 2019, he was diagnosed with Avascular Necrosis and underwent a procedure at a local hospital in Bargarh. When that failed, he travelled to Delhi for a total hip replacement on the right side. Encouraged by its success, he agreed to the same procedure on the left hip, a decision that marked the beginning of an exhausting medical battle.

Shortly after the left-side replacement, Bhaskar developed a severe prosthetic joint infection. What followed was a nightmare: over 20 surgeries across leading metro hospitals, endless courses of antibiotics, and repeated relapses battling a multi-drug resistant strain of Pseudomonas aeruginosa — a bacteria that caused recurring infections and severely impacted his mobility and quality of life.

In early 2025, a local doctor referred him to Manipal Hospital, Bhubaneswar — a move that changed everything.

Here, Dr. Sunil Dash, Senior Consultant – Orthopedics, Manipal Hospital, Bhubaneswar, took charge. After a detailed evaluation, he performed a thorough debridement surgery, removing infected tissues around the joint. “This was not just a routine infection. It had become deeply entrenched over the years. We had to be extremely meticulous in clearing it out,” said Dr. Dash.

Following the surgery, Dr. Subhashree Samantaray, Consultant – Infectious Diseases, Manipal Hospital, Bhubaneswar, took over the medical management. She prescribed a customized, long-term antibiotic regimen, targeting the drug-resistant bacteria that had plagued Bhaskar for years.

“Treating infections caused by multi-drug resistant organisms is never straightforward,” said Dr. Subhashree. “But with the right antibiotic strategy and close monitoring, even the most difficult cases can be turned around.”

Under their combined care, Bhaskar began to recover — slowly but surely. The infection that haunted him for over six years was finally brought under control. The pain subsided. His mobility returned. So did his confidence. Today, Bhaskar is walking again, living without fear, and looking forward to a future that once seemed impossible.

This case is a powerful reminder that even the most chronic, complex conditions can be managed successfully through multidisciplinary collaboration, individualized care, and never giving up hope.
