Persistent Urine Dribbling in a 5-Year-Old Girl Finally Cured at Ankura Hospital, Vijayawada
Vijayawada: April 17th, 2025: After four years of continuous urine dribbling and misdiagnoses, a five-year-old girl has finally found relief at Ankura Hospital, Vijayawada. Her case highlights the expertise of Ankura Hospital team in diagnosing rare conditions.
The child and her family struggled with the emotional and physical toll of persistent urinary leakage in the child. Despite visiting multiple hospitals and undergoing various treatments, the underlying problem remained unidentified. She was misdiagnosed as having a “neurogenic bladder,” a condition in which the nerves controlling the bladder do not function properly. Based on this assumption, she received treatments that failed to improve her condition.
When she was brought to Ankura Hospital, a careful clinical evaluation revealed a crucial detail—urine was seen leaking from the vaginal area. This observation pointed towards a rare condition: an ectopic ureter.
Subsequent imaging tests, including an ultrasound and MRI urogram, confirmed the presence of a duplex kidney system on the left side, meaning the kidney had two separate drainage systems. These tests revealed that the upper ureter was abnormally draining into the vagina instead of the bladder. The diagnosis was confirmed, and the child underwent laparoscopic uretero-ureterostomy, a minimally invasive surgery where the abnormal ureter was redirected to join the normal drainage system.
The child is now finally free from years of discomfort and embarrassment that overshadowed her early childhood. This successful outcome was made possible by the collaborative efforts of Ankura Hospital team including Dr. Varunkumar M, Pediatric Surgeon and Pediatric Urologist; Dr. Nagaraj, Pediatric Anaesthetist; Dr. Murali Krishna B, Pediatric Nephrologist; and Dr. VVS Chandrasekharam, Pediatric Surgeon & Urologist, who guided the team as a mentor.
