Donald Trump is a US politician and the 45th President of the United States. While adored by many, Trump also has his fair share of critics. During the initial stages of his campaign, Trump was not among the favorites to become the United States president. However, helped by some intelligently designed campaign strategies and his focus on local issues, Trump managed to win over American votes.
In the 2016 United States presidential election, Trump received 306 pledged electoral votes while his rival Hillary Clinton got 232. However, it was Hillary who had won the popular vote, after having received 2.9 million more popular votes in comparison to Trump. With this, Donald Trump became the fifth president in the country’s history to have won presidential election even after losing the popular vote. Donald Trump is the oldest person to become presidentand the first to not have any military background or past government experience. He is also the richest president in US history.
Early life and education
Donald Trump was born on June 14, 1946 in Queens, New York City to Frederick Christ Trump and Mary Anne MacLeod Trump. While his father was a real estate developer, his mother was a housewife. Trump completed his school education up to seventh grade from Kew-Forest School. Later, he studied at a private boarding school named New York Military Academy. For college education, Trump attended Fordham University and Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He completed his graduation in economics in May 1968. Donald Trump has married three times, the first of which was Czech model Ivana Zelníčková in 1977. After divorce, Trump married actress Marla Maples in 1993. After another divorce, Trump married Slovenian model Melania Knauss in 2005.
Political career
Trump has had a long career in politics, starting from 1987 when he registered as a Republican. Over the years, he has changed his political affiliations several times. In 1999, he shifted to Reform Party and in 2001, he enrolled with the Democratic Party. In 2009, he switched sides again to go back to Republican Party. In 2016 Unites States presidential election, Trump won 30 states, whichincluded several Democratic strongholds such as Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. In comparison, his rival Hillary Clinton won 20 states. With Trump winning the presidential election, the Republican Party gained control of both houses of Congress. During his tenure as president, Trump has announced important policy decisions related to Paris Agreement on climate change, public health insurance, corporate tax cuts, travel ban on citizens from Muslim-majority countries, Iran nuclear deal and trade relations with China.
Personal pursuits
Trump is an avid golfer and he has been playing the game since his college days. He also likes watching TV serials. Some of his favorites are Fox & Friends and Morning Joe.
